Hi, I'm looking for a good cd player for my dad. He's not as picky as i am but he gave me his budget so i told him i'd ask around. Any suggestions and reviews are welcome. Don't recommend any amps though as he said specifically he just wants a player. He's going to be playing this out loud (for when he plays drums) by the way and not through headphones.

Is he going to use it with a Home Theater system? or, is he going to use it with an audio based system?

If he will play it with his receiver ( HT ) he probably has a DVD connected...??? In this case he can use the DVD as a CD player ( no offense but some people don't realize this can be done...).

If he need indeed a CD player, you don't have many option although you buy used from the Net ( www.audiogon.com , www.audioweb.com , www.ebay.com etc) or at a local audio store.

Some brands that came to mind are from NAD and Cambridge Audio.

These days you can use a good DVD based player from Toshiba, Sony, Denon, etc for less than $200 ( even $60.00 ) have your CD spinning and play SACD/DVD/DVD-A etc...

Your father can't go wrong with any of those brands.

Let us know what you bought at the end...

Happy Christmas,

Jose.

Audio based system. This is going to be exclusively for his drums. He already has a decent amplifier and speakers and usually plays to the radio but has decided to get a cd player. I figured i could probably find a better player asking around on here than going to some place like Best Buy or Circuit City...

I myself have a Rega Jupiter. He isn't wanting that kind of high end stuff... He said his budget was around $200 (slightly more would be fine for a high quality product) for something used or new. I told him it would probably be best to find something used. I saw a used Rega Planet go for $300 on Ebay the other day which i kind of kicked myself for not getting for him...

Do have experience with any of these and/or can you recommend one? If the NAD is on closeout that might be the best deal as i have heard before they make good players.

The Sony SD-595 is a 5 disc unit and is a good buy at $120.00.

But hurry while they last ( NAD ).

Thanks. I actually found a great deal on a NAD 541 (which is the next model up from the 521, right) for $200 slightly used. Think i should take it?
