Hi, I'm new to these boards but I figured you guys could help me make the most of my budget here. I'm looking for some good headphone for $60 or less. I'm no audiophile but I don't like really terrible audio quality either.

I listen to some 70's rock, post-hardcore, classical, and more or less similar varieties of those. I don't like my sound to be too "tinny" but I also don't like an overly powerful bass sound.

Lastly, I'd like the headphones to be at least somewhat comfortable for long periods of time (2+ hours) and I'd prefer they don't need an amp. I also prefer the over the ear headphones (similar to the design of the ones I list below)

The only 3 headphones I've considered are the Sennheiser 201s, 202s, and 205s. I was leaning towards the 205s but I'm just not sure. Hopefully you can help me better understand what my choices are. I'm open for suggestions.
Thanks

Going a little over your budget you would be most satisfied with a pair of sr60/80 Grados. They fit your description perfectly- especially if you like post-hardcore.

This is what I think of the Senn HD201, Koss KSC75, and Senn PX100.

The Senn PX100 will probably have too much bass. The KSC75 are nice sounding, but they are clip on headphones (not over the ear).
The HD201 have a very dry sound, which isn't the most mucisical. I've heard some people like the HD202 better, but I have not heard them at all. Sound quality out of the HD205 seems questionable, so I would probably go with the HD202 unless you can audition them in person. A friendly note though, the HD202 ear pads are in between on-ear headphones and around-ear headphones.

You might find the budget grados to be too tinny sounding.

Based on your sound preference, Koss KSC75 if you don't mind clip-on's and Sennheiser PX100 would work for you.

You can probably get the Senn 201s for under $25.00 and add the new compact Fiio amp for $21.50 and you have a nice portable and home setup.

ive gotta put my vote in for the px100, which IMO absolutely blow away every portable can ive tried at its price point and below, including the ksc75.

they do have a decent amount of bass though, so if thats a big concern, try them out first.

Stretch your budget and go for Grado SR-60s or pick them up used.

Thanks for all your responses guys. The one that caught my eye the most is the SR-60. All I gotta do is test them out and see if I like their sound. From what I've read they seem like great headphones. How will they work without an amp running from my iPod? Also, how would I go about getting these extra pads for the SR60s?

x2 on the used SR-60, can't go wrong for those genres. Also they are driven very easily.

Ha, lets see if you think they are tinny after all.
Keep us posted.

Hey guys. After some testing in the store yesterday, I splurged for the SR80's. I didn't think I would ever be spending $95 on headphones, but these definitely are worth it.

IMO these head phones sound amazing. All of my music has another level of depth to it, and the clarity is just amazing. I hear some things I've never heard before in a some songs. In some cases I don't like the clarity because I hear static and such in my older songs

It just amazes me how I can now easily pick each instrument out and hear it in such great definition.

The 2 main reasons I chose the 80s over the 60 were because I preferred the overall sound on the 80's (mostly because of the bass) and $15 isn't that much of a difference.

overall these headphones are really great IMO. Now I might have to go about getting an amp and some other equipment. I'd love to hear these on a good amp.
