I dunno where you're seeing 580s for $270, last I checked you could still get em under $150 but 2 months ago you could get em for $130. And you can certainly get a decent DIY amp in the FS forum for under $100 or even have one of the DIY big boys build you one if DIY isn't your thing

I admit I didn't search far for the headphones as most of the results given me had that they were discontinued and I only saw it at Amazon for that much. Nevertheless, I am sorry.

If it can be had for less than one hundred fifty, that's fantastic.

troymadison,

Yes, I've owned the Koss ESP950 (twice!) and liked them alot. They sound richer and fuller than Stax to me, plus they have real bass.

How would they compare to hd650s in a decent setup (such as my sig)

troymadison,

I can't say for sure, in terms of your rig, but the ESP950 is, in an odd way, a lot like the HD650 in my mind. (I'm using the 650 now.) They're both fairly warm and a bit dark, but very detailed. The stats are faster, though. I had a couple of quality issues with the Koss (squeals in the drivers and a squeaky headphone frame). The Koss also seem a bit cheesy, build quality-wise and presentation-wise. But they sure sound good. And since they come with their own amp, they make as much or more sense than the HD650 + a good separate amp.

I could be happy, and have been, with either. Like everything else, I'm afraid you'd have to try them to see how you like them. But the Koss are definitely as good as or better than a well-amped HD650.

Different uses and price points - at $35 and open I vote for my PX-100; about $60 used (now <$90 new) it is hard to beat the ER-6i for an iem; then there is the HD-580 at about $130 plus an amp for a full size circumaural.

I would say my latest Lambda Pro pair.
