hmm i've been curious about this as well -- specifically thinking about the a9x vs the a900. unfortunately, searching around has only brought up snippets of info about the a9x (apparently it's similar to the grado sound.)

although the a900 seems to be intended to replace the a9x, it'd still be interesting if anyone who's heard the a9x could compare it with the a900 or hd580

... especially soundstage wise...

from the audio technica site, ALL those earphones mentioned so far are above his budget.

aim9x, all the headphones in the link you posted are also way above his budget.

The w100 and w1000 with their woody colouration is not suitable.. they are more for mellow, slow and relaxing music

Hey now, I use the W100's for just about every type of music and they do just fine with everything I've ever thrown at them. There may be better phones specifically for rock but to say the W100 and W1000's are strictly for mellow music is just plain WRONG!!!

I had W2002's. They were not very good with hard music.

My definition of hard music would be:

Megadeth
Led Zeppelin
Deep Purple
Black Sabbath
Rainbow
Some Uriah Heep
Tool
Some Glenn Hughes
Trapeze
Some Robin Trower
Some Hendrix
Some Southern Rock

They did zip for me. I liked them in that application a lot less than the Senn HD-600s I had.

On jazz and classical I liked the W2002's a lot.

The CPD I had then was a Wadia 301, amps were either Maxxed out Meta42, Headroom MOH-R, Berning MicroZOTL, Melos SHA-Gold, Headroom Cosmic. I tried every damn interconnect cable I had (Cardas, Magnan, DiMarzio, Audioquest, Monster, Analysis Plus), tuberolled any tubes in my amps, and I could never get the W2002's to rock.

Try Grado's, or Beyer's.

The A900s, I really wouldn't recommend for hard music, they're too bright, and bass shy (even with that DADS system) to be good for thrash metal and suchlike...

They're the only ones that I can comfortably comment on... as to the rest of the range... ?!

A900, (HD590, HFI-650, HP910, CD1700, MS-1, SR225, or DT531)?
at $180 that seems like the only alternative.

if it's "comfort," then that leaves the A900, HD590, CD1700 and DT531. comfort is a very subjective thing. (as is sound).

oh, sorry, forgot that i sent him the review w/o the responses. In the version with the responses, they talk about the A900s and that they're really good for regular listening and are only about 180. only 10$ over-budget

I think the A900's do pretty good on metal and listen to Iron Maiden, Opeth, Ozzy and a whole slew of other bands on them.

Yes, the bass isn't overpowering, but there's enough of it and it's pretty tight. Another thing, these have punch...not as much as Grados, but the impact of the drums fits rock well.

I find them very comfortable, their size being their only drawback, they're big.
