I've been using QC35 for over 3 months I think, please don't bash me, I know it's well overpriced. But I've never seen anything as comfortable as Bose earphones. QC35 has superior ANC, hands down (yay to 12 hours quiet flight) . But the sound is a little too boring for my taste, especially on small volume. I've been looking around for a cheap pair of ANC over-ear that I can basically thrash around and I came across ATH-ANC9. Is it any good? It looks like your everyday ANC, with replaceable plug and battery. Never had the chance to try one, but looks promising. it cost about AUD250 give or take, which like half the price of QC35.

I have reviewed several wireless ANC headphones and I am confident that there are no less expensive products on the market with adequate ANC compared to the QC35. That said, I am in progress of a full review of the Nura Nuraphones and their G2 firmware patch just added ANC and audio pass-through. They are a bit more expensive than the QC35 II but from my initial testing, their ANC implementation is on par or better than the QC and the audio profile is far more exciting than that of the Bose. Every ANC headphone I have sampled produces a noticeable hiss when ANC is active with the exception of the nuraphones. With no music playing, and the volume at full, I was able to toggle the ANC on and off with no perceivable auditory change.
My full reviews should be out in another week or so but if you have any questions feel free to ask.

If you think the QC35 is boring, the ATH-ANC9 will put you to sleep. You're actually going in the opposite direction if you want to go away from boring.

From a cost perspective, the Anker Soundcore Space NC ($99, sometimes on sale for $79) has a fun, bass-driven sound, but it's not muddy and the lows are nice, deep, and round (get your mind out if the gutter).

The Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 is also a good choice and sounds better than the QC 35.

ANC on both of them are OK, but they will do the job (used the Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 on a 5 hour flight).

Obviously if cost is no object, the Sony 1000XM2 and B&W PX are great (I have both). If you like to fiddle around with EQ, the Sonys have an app to do just that.
