I don't use an amp for the HD280 (no I should say didn't since the 280's are in storage for sale) but a mixing console. I have two mixing setups, one a proper Soundcraft desk and one a small Behringer mixer which is connected to my smaller PC audio editing setup (which I was using the HD20 with until recently). By itself with a typical amp I found that the HD280 lacks bass and can be a bit rough, no wrong word... err, a bit too sharp at the top. If I'm just listening using the console, the a quick tweak of the EQ later, there is no problem

Whatever the amp is, some sort of bass / treble adjustment might be beneficial with 'defeat' only when you want to use it for really detailed listening.

I am using them for listening to music at work, the isolation is great. Tune out the cubicle neighbors
