so i bought a pair of used DT990s on eBay only to find out that they're worthless without a decent amp... since I'm not rich or anything, is there anything out there (doesn't bother me to buy second-hand) that could power these phones at a satisfactory level for under 200 USD?

thanks for your input

Give yourself a favour and buy a HeadSave Classic / Go-Vibe .... The Classic with cable should be arround those 100 euros and the Go-Vibe with Cable should be around that . www.headsave.com

HI darcangelo , glad to hear you bought a pair of dt990 .
They're good cans for my taste and ears , I've had them for a while and ..
they NEED some power to run as they've been thought for , and this power has to be clean power .

The two amps which i think can fit the picutre for a bit more $ are the REGA EAR and the GILMORE LITE .There's currently an auction on ebay.co.uk for an old style Rega Ear amplifier , maybe you can have it for few bucks

This two amps provide some juice , the first can be found new for 200$ and the Gilmore Lite sells new for a bit more .

Since the 770s are similar to the 990s I'd agree 100%, these cans need good clean power to sound their best, they've notably improved everytime I upgraded my PPA, and on lesser amps they don't sound so hot.

Best thing you can do is put as much money as you can into an amp because you'll notice every difference.

ok, after reading your replies and since the USD is pretty low against the Euro these days, I've decided to up my price to 200 USD...

I also see Tim D selling a Dynamic Gilmore by Subsonic for 190 USD... should I get that?

And additional question for Europeans: is there any customs problems when one buys an amp (used or new) from the US? I'd hate to see the pricetag doubled by some stupid custom fee...

thanks for your replies

it likely much depends on the carrier used , as much as the country you live in ( my guess )

For used items , the item should be marked as Used / from repair ..
for new item generally speaking ( my exp .) if the item is not a very big and it doesn't need insurance ( it's not a big value and/or shipping method is very safe ) you shouldn't be taxed at all
