What would be the best amp for the HD 600s ? Someone recommended the Hornet but as I don't need portability I figured for the same price I could probably do better (or not)

Sennheiser (the company) showcases their headphones using the Solo by Graham Slee. I would think that Sennheiser could get any amp they want to showcase their headphones, so if they have chosen the Solo I would think that is one heck of an endorsement for the Solo.

Cary 300 SEI.

Ive heard supras, melos's, earmax(lame base one), wheatfield HA-2s (nice miss it), WA2 , HR-2, Prehead I and II SE, headroom MOH with post 2004 REF modules (very good), Blackgated gilmore reference, and the Cary 300 is by far the best I HAVE HEARD...

On some cd's the SENN 600s w/cardas actually sounded better than the r10s with the Cary.

Amamzing what that amp does with those phones (and the cardas is also a major contributer as well...).

I think most of us jumped on a reply when he said "best amp"..

ignoring the rest of the sentence where (s)he said "same price as the Hornet"..

Thanks for specifying that. Yes my budget is limited to that price range - give or take $50

Some cMoy are decent with HD6xx and it's within your budget. Make sure the builder implements two 9vDC batteries.

well you could buy a set of sophia 300b tubes for the price of the hornet...

The Ray Samuel portable amps are pretty strong at that price point. A used WA3 with the right tubes would do you nicely Id bet.

I've always wondered how they came to this decision. If the audio engineers are anything like most audio enthusiasts I can't imagine the debate that choosing an amp caused

For the money (and a lot more)... you'll find if very difficult to better either the PinkFloyd modded XCAN v3, or even better with the Senns... the Darkvoice 332. Really, hard to believe SQ!

I have a related question. A friend of mine wants to get a set of HD600's after listening to mine for a while. Problem is he doesn't have ~$300.

He can get 90% of the way there for $130 with the 580's. My question is if there is any non-DIY amp out there that can sufficiently power these and keep him under $250 or so.
