I just got a pair of Beyerdynamic DT990s for half-price on ebay. I currently have a PA2V2 amp set up for listening through my  iPod (it works great with my Shure SE530s), but I find myself having to crank the volume on the amp and the iPod all the way up to hear anything with my new DTs. What's the best portable amp setup for them for around $100? I don't want to spend too much on an amp since I'm a poor college student and am new to the whole audiophile business. I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

The Beyerdynamic DT990 have three versions: 32, 250 and 600 Ohm. There is no 300 Ohm. Just wanted to clear that up.

I have my DT990 (250 Ohm) for five years now and I like the synergy with the Meier Corda 3Move amp/dac. I think you should be able to find a second hand one for a modest price if you'd look for it.

The 600 Ohm model is a tough deal for a portable amp I would suppose. You would certainly need a top tier portable amp like a Corda Stepdance or a Pico Power (release in the first half of 2011) to make this high Ohmed headphone sing. $100 won't nearly be enough to find such an amp. Why didn't you buy the 32 Ohm version which is ideal for portable use?

Well, I saw the headphones on ebay, and it seemed like too good a deal to pass up! At the time, I didn't realize they'd be so hard to amp. Any recommendations for a tube amp or something that isn't portable?

The best amp for the DT880 600 ohm is your ipod.   Don't be suckered into thinking a dedicated amp is gonna make your headphones sound any better.  It won't, but when you pay big bucks, you will think it will.  If you really need more volume, then get a 15 dollar fiio amp.

You crazy Carl... :) He's already got a PA2V2 and it's too quiet (and he has 990s not 880s). A really cheap amp ($15 Fiio) will make things sound worse in my experience and will not help with the volume issue. As to what portable would be suitable and cheap I don't have much experience.

Was all I could find regarding the 990 but I'm almost certain anything relating to 880s 600 ohm would also be applicable.

I've always like iBasso products maybe the P4 would have enough power? It's 600mw + 600mw in 32 ohms but it does only recommend 8-300 ohm headphones (edit: Sorry skimmed over how much you wanted to spend so nvm the P4). Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Congrats with the purchase. But didn't you want a portable amp? The DT 990 is said to sound very good with tubes, so you'll probably have a good time with this combo.

How does ur new combo sound?
I too have recently bought the Beyer DT990 250Ohms; off Amazon..
I bought it due to reviews of it being a really good bassy headphone.

I had the Bose On ear for 2years and i really liked the bass and thum~; i thought the beyer 990 would be an upgrade to it.
However I dont seem to feel the bass and dum? I am pairing it with the Ibasso D4 Mamba.

Ultimately i am looking for a headphone that makes ur heart jump; as if like you're in a club

Any ideas?

I decided on the Millet Hybrid Minimax; saw one for an unbeatable price and couldn't resist. If anybody's interested, I can put up a post of my impressions of the new combo.
