Well I've bumped up my budget for amps so now I just need suggestions

. I've been looking at the Melos SHA-1 lately and it seems to be a pretty good deal for under $500 but how well does it work with non-Grado headphones, i.e. Sony and Sennheiser? What other options do I have in this price range? Solid or tube doesn't really matter to me although I would prefer switching over to tubes. Should I just save for an MPX3 6SN7? How much more would one of those run? Or I could go in a completely different route, and buy two new headphones, since I already have an NAD and a Marantz. What would you guys recommend?

Thanks

A baseline MPX3 is $949. Also factor in the cost of tubes and such.. That said, I think you might want to consider something like the Gilmore Lite with the DPS.

Well I have around $650 right now and will probably have around $2500 more by the end of the summer so I would be able to afford it but not for a while

. I see you have the MPX3 how would you rank it among cheaper amps? Also this is just imo but I wanted to stay away from the Gilmore Lite because it looks rather cheap for a $500 amp.

The Gilmore Lite is about $300, isn't it? Not a bad value; I built a Dynalo (the DIY version, more or less) and am quite happy with it. Not to push something on you you don't want, but give it a listen if you can.

But if I had to pick a "best value" around $500, I'd grab a Corda Aria. Seems like a great deal for the dollar, and you get crossfeed and a DAC to boot. What's not to like?

I was looking at the Corda Aria as well, since it's priced around $450 but I was wondering if there's anything else better for the price. I live in Hawaii so I don't have many opportunities to "try before I buy" that's why I have to sell so much of my stuff, so I want to get this down on the first try

this time around. How does the Aria sound compared to a Melos?

I dunno about "really fast" but tubes do in fact burn out, and replacing them is definitely a cost you will want to factor in to your purchasing decision. I think with only the rarest exception, solid state amps offer a better price/performance than tube models. They also survive better on long flights to far away locations ...like Hawaii.

Wow, I'm suprised by this comment. Have you seen a lite in person? IMO, the lite is very well built and better looking than a lot of amps around $500.

What kind of solid states would you recommend in this price range? You're right, I'm a little wary of sending tube amps through the mail to here considering what USPS did to my Marantz.

The whole price/performance thing of tubes versus solid state is really apples and oranges. Tube amps are just different than SS amps. A tube amp can do things that SS cannot and vise-versa. The EC-01 I sampled for a few weeks outperformed any SS amp I've heard in that price range, with my HD650's. As for tube life, yes eventually they do burn out but not quickly. And, many of the tube variations are readily available cheap. Tubes can last from 2,000-10,000+ hours depending on the type. Check to see what tubes you will be needing first. Even at 4 hours or more per day I doubt you'll be using up tubes more than every couple years. Is that really an issue? You're more likely to buy new tubes for different sounds as tube rolling becomes a fun hobby in itself. As for shipping, if you're going to be shipping this thing back and forth regularly then that might be an issue, but otherwise just make sure it's packed well (double boxed!) and it shouldn't be a problem. Heck, if you're travelling that much just buy a RSA SR-71 and bring it with you in your pocket and shipping will never be an issue!

If you know what headphone you like most, then buy an amp that will make that particular can sing. I personally favor Sennheiser HD600 & 650's and those cans love tubes. For the jazz I listen to they are delightful. If you're more into Metallica and Grado's that's a different story. Also, is this a dedicated headphone amp or do you need it to be a preamp to work with speakers as well?

You may want to consider the Mapletree Ear Purist + HD. It could be yours for the $600 budget you set up. The sound is tight, detailed, and punchy.

For $300 you can purchase an used Musical Fidelity X-Can V3. The for another $40 or so you can modify it as per PinkFloyd's website. Finally for $40 you can get a pair of matched russian 6H23-EB. These will bring the amp to a whole new level for under $400.

If you want a SS amp that tips a bit towards tube warmth, I'd solidly recommend the Rudistor NX-01 in this price range. It shares many of the characteristics of the more expensive HR2. The EC-01 is another great suggestion by kentamcolin. I've had both recently and although I prefer the NX-01 they're different price ranges.

And tubes can last for years. I wouldn't worry about about burn-out. I've traded all my tube equipment before I've ever had a tube burn-out.
