Ok here is my dilemma,
I am looking for a pair of headphones that provide isolation, that are not in ear such a ety’s, and provide good sound. These phones would be used on the subway so isolation is essential and style is important. It seems that there are only a couple of choices that would fit my situation. Sony V-6 look good, but it seems that its best attribute is its bass, and I am not really interested in that. The Ultrasone HFI-650 seem to be the best in terms of sound quality, but the design of the headband makes it unsuitable for portable use. I searched the forms and nothing truly impressed me. Any help would be great

Thanks.

Phones i am looking at but need opinions-
Sony V6(I have read all the previous post on these)
Ultrasone HFI-650
Pioneer SE-MONITOR10R
Pioneer HDJ-1000
Sennheiser PX200

I have no expereince with any of these, but from what I can tell, I wouldn't consider the V6 a portable phone. They are rather bulky and have a thick, long cord.

from the reams of posts that i've read, it seems that all of the cans that isolate enough for a subway, say, are bulky (like the V6s). So long as that's all right, you should add the Senn280s and the Koss 3AA/4AAs to your list - both are supposed to isolate better than the V6s. (They're the phones I'm currently considering for much the same purposes... but then, I don't care about styling.)

Well here is the thing, i have read that the senn are not as good as the Ultrasone, and both use the same headband and look the same. I would lean more towards them because of the great reviews they have recived here over the past couple of weeks, while the 280's get plenty of negitive review from what i have read.

jack963: V6's are definitely portable, señor crackhead. The PX200's are smaller but wouldn't offer enough isolation for the subway. The thing is if you don't want super small in-ear phones like the ety's for portable isolation, you're going to have to go with big, circumaural phones. There's no way around that. As long as you're not afraid to look dorky, heh.

I vote for the HFI-650's. I have no idea what you mean that the headband design makes them unsuitable for portable use, in fact, it does the opposite. The phones fold up for portable use. Anyway, the HFI-650 both sounds great and isolates wonderfully.

The D66 hardly provides isolation. Not to the degree of 280's or V6's.

i have the D-66 and they were horrible on trains, the sound is very nice, but it provides very little isolation.

Yes, they're closed, but they have a diaphragm that relays sound into the chamber for safety's sake. The 'cotton mod' damps a good deal of this.

HD-25-1, better than any of them you listed

If you can't find them, I would vote for the V6s. The reason for the HD280 being a love or hate phone is the headband legth, which give some too much clambing force. Also that phone offers little bass, so that is what some people miss in those phones too. Perhaps Bangraman can say more about the HD-25s, as I think he has heard many more 'phones than me to compare the HD25 to

king896 (wierd, youre 896 in 869), i cant see your point about headband issue. HFI-650 for me at least gives good clamp what you need for portable on move, and it folds up for back, senn 280 dosnt do it, and hfi-650 has better sound quality. Only issue with 650 headband for me is when you lay on your back, then theres no gravity pressing it to your head --> fall off easily.
