im sure a lot of ppl will suggest you consider the sony V6 or 7506. its bass is full and well-liked, and its said to be pretty detailed. they can be found for $80-90 at retail stores like Fry's I believe.

Penguin, first, have to start with the standard greeting..."Welcome to Head-Fi! Sorry about your wallet."

OK, now for the specific question... as always, the answer is, "it depends..."

Do you want something open or closed? Do you have an amp or are you listening straight from a sound card or portable device (like a CD player)? WHEN do you want to get them???

A lot of folks here like the Sony MDR V6. Supposedly has bass galore and a good sound for your style of music.

Grado RS60s are one of the lower cost favs of many at this site. Others have become keen on the RS40s, some folks prefer the more refined sound of the RS80s. The problem with all of these is that they are open (meaning, the sound will leak out and potentially disturb others around you and sound will leak in, messing up the sound YOU'RE hearing).

Koss KSC35: if you can find them, the budget headphone to own. The Koss PortaPros are decent, but not quite the same as the 35's. The advantage is, you can still find them just about everywhere.

Many folks also like Sony E888s (earbud style).

Sennheiser has come out with two new headphones in your pricerange that suond like they should be good..... PX 100 and PX 200. See the thread
The 200 are closedhere

The 200 are closed and the 100 open. But, they are not shipping to the US (except for LTUCCI, but that's another issue) until January.

Lots of options available in this price range. See if you can find a place to demo some of these. They all have a particular sound that you may or may not like. You'll be much happier finding something that will work for you BEFORE you buy than finding it after you buy. You'll also save some cash.

Good luck!

Ignoring the open/closed/big/small/portability/comfort/looks issue, IMO you can't go wrong with the Grado sr60s.

Eggo MDR-D66SL
or
MDR-7506.
The MDR-7506 is very practical, can be used out of virtually anything and have a good balance of sound. Folds, unobtrusive, reasonably comfortable.
The MDR-D66 Eggo is somewhat superior to the Grados at this price in my opinion. Much better balance of sound, even offers some isolation, folds, easier to drive (yes, I include the SR60 in that). It sounds better than the 7506 but is not as practical because noise from outside comes through much more.
The HD280's are a bit studioey if you get my meaning, they're not really all that multipurpose in comparison.
PX200, cool looking but horribly boomy
HD212, horribly boomy and cheap sounding everything else

Well,

Newegg sells HD580s for $120, and sennheiser is offering a 20 dollar rebate on those phones. Though I've never heard 580s, if they are really as close to my 600s as I'm lead to believe they would have my highest vote.
