Best $300~ headphones for music listening?

To my ears/equipment, modern lossy formats like LAME encoded mp3 and aac are transparent at pretty low bitrates and sound completely fine. You should use the foobar plugin to try an ABX test between lossless and lossy, I found it quite enlightening; many, many things in the audiophile world are completely psychosomatic. Hydrogenaudio is a good place to go to learn more about this sort of thing.

I've not heard the hifiman headphones, but I have heard the denons, and I thought they sounded great, maybe not the best headphones for bluegrass though. You should try and audition headphones as much as you can, not only does it help you form a valid opinion rather that what somebody else has written, it also helps quell the upgraditis that plagues the wallets of many head-fiers.
