Best $200 Headphones

Jun 3, 2007 at 10:57 PM Post #31 of 59
I thought about this a lot and I need a pair of closed cans (am I cool enough to use that word now?:P) which can be driven well unamped and can serve a wide variety of functions (music, movies, games etc.). Do I have any better choice than the a900?

BTW: Portability is always a plus, so I would get the ANC7/ES7 as long as I don't really sacrifice sound quality.

I find the ad series of Audio Technicas to be excellent value for the money. Having previously owned AD900's, I found them very enjoyable to listen to, having a wide soundstage and an open sound. They are bass light, but what bass is there is well defined.

as a lot already said,

Grados/alessandros - MS1, SR225
AT - A500/700/900/ES7
Senns - HD580

or some used HD600.. .. ..

now make your choice

OK, in the absence of new information, I will get the a900. I understand that it may not give the best performance in rock, like the Grado SR225, but it seems to suit me better overall. There is no need for an amp(which I didn't realize was necessary for the others), noise barely leaks and it is supposedly more comfortable. I hope this choice isn't too risky. After all, Audio Technica is not as well known as the other brands and it wasn't even one of my original candidates. (thanks for those who made me aware of it)

BTW: I will purchase it in the morning, so if you think there's something I should know first, this would be a good time.

You'll be very happy w/ the A900, its a great headphone. But I have a feeling you'll soon own a SR225 and perhaps a Senn in not too long. Oh and an amp, dac soon after

Quick, but related question on Audio Technica: How does the sound quality of the ATH-ANC7 and ATH-ES7 compare to that of the ATH-a900? I'm primarily interested in sound quality, but portability is always a plus.

BTW: It's very strange, but I can't find the ATH-a900s ANYWHERE on Audio Technica's product list: http://www.audio-technica.com/cgi-bi...ch/all/prod.pl I hope they weren't discontinued. Although this suggests they are not normally available in the US.

probably aren't avaiable directly in N\A but u can get them from audiocubes .
edit: actually i see musician's friend and guitarcenter and a bit more do sell them , though for more expensive prices , and of course ebay

Well, they arrived and I've already listened to them a bit. They're very comfortable and look nice. However, the difference between them and my PX200 headphones is not big to me. At least not yet. Maybe I just need to burn them in. But so far, I'm not impressed. After all, these headphones are almost four times as expensive.

Hi,

I'm new to all this but want to learn more.

I'm looking for the best headphones I can get at $200 or less. I'm currently looking at the SR225s and the HD595s. Are there other brands I should consider? Which would be best in this range?

I could theoretically go up to $300 and get the HD650s, but it seems to me like the difference is no longer significant enough to justify the extra cash unless you have amazing ears. I guess most on these forums would disagree.

Also, are amps necessary if the volume is already loud enough? For example, if I turn up the volume to max on my Macbook, even my PX200 headphones are more than loud enough.

Thanks in advance!

340's..They are fast becoming my Fav headphone..

My ears certainly aren't. I also doubt the headphones are, after all sound does come out of them.

Seriously, it's not bad, it's just hard to say it's a huge difference.

Maybe it's all just bs and there really is no significant AUDIBLE difference. After all, human hearing is from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The a900 can deliver anything from 5 Hz to 40,000 kHz. Wouldn't this be senseless? Many of the sound quality improvements could be the same way. I hope I'm wrong.

there should be a REALLY significant difference even if your ears are not quite trained yet.
