Hi!

I just bought a pair of DT880 from another forum member and I'm trying to find the best amp in the 150$ range to drive this little beast. I'm a pretty new head-fier, so this would be my first amp. My source right now is my Cowon iAudio X5 (because the headphone out of my laptop is awful), but I'm not looking for a portable amp. I'm listening mostly to progressive rock, metal, jazz and classical.

Any suggestions ?

If you're handy with a soldering iron, get a Millett board and refuse to go ritzy with any component on the board at all. Mount it in a cigar box.

Sixteen people will now come here to tell me how important the capacitors on the Millett board are, but Pete Millett says they aint all that important. Get "good" parts, but you don't need "special" parts.

That way you can easily keep it under $150. You'll need 'good' tubes, but that could be a pair of RCA 12FM6's for about $6.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, but since I don't have the time right now, nor the tools to build myself an amp, is there something else that would do the job?

The problem with buying amps is that DIYers turn themselves into corporate arteests and charge way too much money for way too little.

does that apply to big names like rsa, headamp...etc. or are you referring to strictly ebayers that sell tubes?
