Besides Grados, what else sounds nice out of an RA-1?

Hirsch likes the HD600 pair with it, IIRC....

Yep. When I compared them side by side, I felt that the HD-600/RA-1 combo had more going for it than the RS-1/RA-1 combo. Simply more fun for me to listen to. YMMV.

I believe KR uses the HD600/RA1 combo as well. I've heard the combo and I like it but I feel the HD600's need more power to get rid of that veil.

I also had a good experience with the RA-1 and HD-600. It was different from, but in its own way as good as the x-canv2 with the x-psu--good competition.

Bah, kick me, in all the time I had the two they never met...

I remember Hirsch posting about the combo and meaning to try it, but sold off the 600s... Oh well...

RA-1 is very slightly warm, tubey sounding and works well with my HD580, HD600 and AKGK501. Won't blast your ears with level, but sure sounds clean and musical.

Do you need to run it at maximum volume? Does it ever clip?

I run it at about 10 o'clock. Nice comfortable volume, might be a bit low for some. I'd never use excess volume on the 501, doesn't need it. It communicates at a moderate volume. The sign of a great headphone.

i found the hd600 to be lacking with the ra-1. the smoothness and lack of extension kicks in even harder, and you're left with nothing but a soft thick midrange.

wasn't my thing, but the ra-1's lack of detail and frequency extension never really sat well with me. i always liked my meta42 a bit more.

I guess you like your sound hyped up and non-neutral then.
