I've been reading through this board for the past hour but haven't quite pinned down what I need to know. I'll try to be prompt (stick with me, i'm very new to this).

I just ordered a pair of PSB bookshelf speakers, a subwoofer, and a receiver. My plan was to connect the PSB speakers and subwoofer to the receiver, then connect the receiver to my PowerMac G5's audio out with a $2 RCA-to-3.5mm stereo cable. I'm guessing this is where my weak link lies (from receiver to stock sound card on my Mac).

What is the best route to go in terms of obtaining better sound? Do I need to purchase some sort of DAC to interconnect between my Mac and receiver? Links to whatever I need would be much appreciated. Also, I'm kind of on a budget right now, so maybe some sub $100 suggestions would also be helpful.

How about an Apogee Duet with 1/4" male TS-to-1/4" male TS cables connected to powered monitors? That's the way I'd go if the stereo is in close proximity to your computer. If not, then use an AirPort Express and an AV receiver with digital inputs for the speakers and subwoofer you have in mind.
