Hey all,
Well I have kind of been a phantom on this site for quite a while but never really said much. I am wanting to get into this little hobby of yours, cheap. I say cheap only because I don't wanna go balls to the wall and then a week later decide I hate it. I know I know I will end up sinking way too much into this but that is a risk I am willing to take. Anyways to business.

I am looking for a cheapish starter DIY amp project, just kind of wondering how much it would run me. I am not too worried about it being complicated, I am a pretty technical guy and one of my friends makes guitar amplifiers so if I get stuck I can ask him what's what. I don't know if it matters but I haven't picked out headphones yet either. If their are any good combos or something please suggest them. Well this post has been sufficiently vague but I have looked at enough posts to know you guys won't tear me apart too bad

Thanks for any suggestions!

Andrew

PS
My source will be my laptop (is that bad???) it is a Sony Vaio SZ160P

Well, I'm assuming you're looking for a headphone amp rather than a speaker amp, right? (Speaker amps are great projects, too. That's more my area of interest.

You've certainly got plenty of options. The CMoy and PIMETA are great choices, novice and more experienced builds, respectively. The CMoy could be considered downright cheap, you can build a very full-featured amp for under $50. There are plenty more options out there, but those two should give you some good reading material.

A site well worth checking out is www.tangentsoft.net/audio. There is tons of good info there.

EDIT: By the way, just a little farther down the main page there is a DIY section of these forums.
