I have a set of AKG K701s that I bought recently that I would like to use for bedroom listening. Being that these are pretty nice 'phones I'd like to make sure I'm not selling them short of their potential, but I'd like to keep costs pretty reasonable as well. (<$1000)

Thinking about getting a Channel Islands VHP-2 amp and possibly the VAC-1 power supply to go along with it as well. I'm welcome to other suggestions within this price range but I've heard great things about the CI stuff.

For the source, I had in mind the Squeezebox Duet. It appeals to me because I can see everything in my hand instead of craning my neck to see the display on the unit. I also have another Squeezebox in my living room setup and the remote can control both. However, I'm concerned that the Wolfson DAC that ships with the Duet may not be the best. Any experiences here? Would it be worthwhile to get an upgraded DAC like the VDA-2?

At that point, I'm almost equally tempted to upgrade my main system to the Transporter and move the Squeezebox Classic to my bedroom, but that's pushing my budget!

Thoughts?

IF you are open to the DIY world, there are a couple of amps on the for sale forum you should look into. The M^3 is a great SS amp, and oneplustwo is a real craftsman.
Another option is a new hybrid called the CTH. I use one with my K601s and I know that the 701s have been used successfully with it as well. Sachu has one for sale, along with a selection of tubes. This is one sweet little amp.
As far as DACs are concerned, the Cambridge Audio DAC Magic is considered good value. and is an excellent upgrade from the built in DAC in the Duet.

I haven't used it with 701s, but my Channel Islands VHP-1 has worked well with Senn 650s, and really started to shine when I added the power supply upgrade. It went from "just okay" to "wow, this thing sounds great." I thought I'd throw that out there if you decide to go the CI route. I also hear great things about their DAC, though I haven't tried it.

dekaliber, welcome to headfi, and sorry about your wallet.

I am not a big fan of the K701, but I understand why people like that headphone. The times that I have liked it best, it has been driven by HeadRoom gear. I also think you are correct about SB DAC. So, in true headfi tradition, I am going to up your budget and suggest the HeadRoom Ultra Desktop Amp.

That said, I think the DIY route suggested above could yield plenty of bang for the buck. I think the most difficult thing to get and stay within your budget will be the DAC.
