I am curious if head-fier could like a pair of Beats if the following held true:

They were $150-200 new
They had a driver from a respected company
They sounded good
Had a decent detachable cable

Sounds more like "If I modded a really badly built pair of headphones with minor improvements, would anyone buy them?"...

Yes, and such exists already and has been critically acclaimed by no other than much respected member of the headphone and audio community at large, Tyll Hertsens

Maybe this answers you're question: Yamaha Pro 500

I've these cans in the very colour you picture - they are awesome but borrow many design cues from original Beats Studio, so it's no wonder Beats opened a lawsuit against Yamaha.

I picked up the Pro500's for an absolute steal of a price (£169.99) and they are definitely a true blue basshead headphone for sure.

Think Beats Studio (original version) on steroids and you get the idea.

The question was more geared towards if a headphone was good can people get past the stigma of owning a pair of beats.

No stigma for owning beats with me - quite the opposite in fact.

So Tyll Hertsen seems to be the Jesse Jackson of headphone owners. And just curious has anyone owned anything by beats or the Yamaha Pro 500. And when I say own more then a month.

Meh,  it don't mean much if he approves of the new beats. Tyll also liked the Skullcandy Aviator and Mixmaster but I don't see audiophiles running out and buying Skullcandy or even changing their minds about them.
Yes, I've owned beats and I still do, but I'm not going to delude myself and put them on the same level as real headphones, yes the new beats are an improvement, they are finally on par with entry level audiophile headphones but if you're coming from the bottom (in regards to sound) there's no where left to go but up and the new beats is a great example of that.

As for your question, yes I would consider them if they sounded good but just like a Hyundai or Kia they will always remain a joke among enthusiast.

I've also owned the Yamaha Pro400 and Pro500 and loved them.

The beats invasion has been on the horizon for some time now - Tyll Hertsens review was the signal of beats touch down - one small step for Dre one giant leap for beats cans :D

Let me put it this way - that stigma wouldn't be around if those criteria were true in the first place.

Every brand if headphone maker has released lemons before, unfortunately the hipsters and audio snob few chose beats as their default whipping boy.

Always worth remembering - Beats is the biggest headphone brand in the world with a gigantic US domestic 60% share of the over $100 market and virtually every other brand has tried to imitate beats styling in some form of fashion, Yamaha, Sennheiser to name but a few, but the solo2 pulled a sucker punch on them all be being more subtle in the style dept. with the solo2 and now with a superior sonic signature - have now brought audiophile sound to the masses - everybody is an audiophile now - lol.

Like Tyll states in his YouTube review:

"because with this headphone they have just brought to the world the headphone that is most likely to be the most commonly sold headphone in the world, they've brought to that really good sound and so for the next little while beats is going to be selling really terrific sound to people and people are going to be getting their first experience with really good sound as the artist intended essentially".

Stigma schmigma - true audiophiles don't hold such and appreciate quality sound regardless of brand.

A parody of beats, past, present and future in an avant garde way but hey, this is beats by Dr Dre

The difference is, Beats has released mostly lemons.

Popularity doesn't equal quality. Justin Bieber was the biggest thing in music for a while, but you won't find me pumping him through my system (well, maybe "Baby"

)

Of course. If a competitor is making money without the product to back it up, you better copy what they're doing right. Beats did their marketing right, even if it wasn't to an audiophile's liking. No one's trying to deny that.

One, only the ones buying the Solo2 are getting quality sound for the price. Apparently their other models are still okay at best. Two, it takes more than good gear to be an audiophile. It's a hobby, not a purchase.

Like Tyll states in his YouTube review:

Sure, you're exactly right we shouldn't judge the Solo2 because of the brand!

Likewise, though, we shouldn't judge the brand by the Solo2. Every company produces lemons, and every company produces happy mistakes. From their first headphone, Beats has produced expensive headphones with a focus on style and branding, with sound quality ranging from okay to downright bad. They've produced a couple good headphones, including one that's very competitive for the price, but that doesn't invalidate the rest of their product line. I'll respect the Solo2, assuming other reviews are in line with Tyll's or I get a chance to hear them myself, but I'm not ready to respect Beats yet. Let's see if the trend towards quality continues first, hm?

Yeah but how many sold them for $300?

What made it worse for Beats is that, on top of that, you'd get people who haven't heard anything else saying it's absolutely the best (like when someone with a Lifestyle system says a Yamaha receiver with Monitor speakers are ugly and the sound sucks based on the price being a fraction of the Bose), and then say that German headphones are ugly (as if a headphone that looks like one kind of rice cake counts for taste).
