Beats by Dr. Dre

Ok, let me just start off saying that I am not a big fan of beats (I used to 'til I did more research.)

A lot of people that I know either own beats or want beats. My brother already bought beats tour and is planning on buying studio beats. I keep telling him that there are way better headphones out there for the same price or cheaper but he doesn't agree. He said that the point of owning headphones is that it's noise-canceling.... And I disagree to that. Can someone please tell me some headphones that are way better than beats and whether or not you buy headphones only because it's noise-canceling.

Well, i'll start off by saying that this is my opinion. I think about  85% (conservatively) of headphones in that price range are in their own way better than beats.
 
If you're after sound, honestly there are many many more options out there.
As far as specifically which are "way better" than beats, well it comes down to what you are looking for in headphones. Do you want bass-heavy phones? do you listen to a lot of classical music and want analytical detailed headphones? Or would you like a more balanced sound?
 
Do you want around-ear, on-ear, or in-ears?
 
 
As far as "noise cancelling" goes, the term you are looking for is isolation. most headphones don't "cancel" music, but rather isolate - beats included. There are plenty of superior sounding headphones that can be had for $300 that isolate the same - if not better than their shiny plastic colored competitors (beats).
 
However if you want a stylish (fashion statement) headphone, and you don't know the difference between good sound and a clock-radio then you could probably do worse than beats.

If I'm not mistaken the Studios does have active noise cancellation (not just passive isolation).  That is, they take in sound (from a microphone somewhere on the Beats), invert the wave it gets, and spits it out of the speakers.  It cancels out noise that way on top of isolation.  I don't now much more on how it works, but the Studios do take batteries and have active cancellation.  IDK how well it works though
 
I'll agree with everything else.  Something like the B&W P3 will be a huge upgrade, even some V-Moda models like the M80/V80.

I took a friends of mine in an HMV store in the UK and we compared the Dr.Dre line with some denons they had. i think they were the D1001 and the D2000. i was so happy that the difference was so obvious that even my untrained ears of my friend could tell the difference.
The most expensive Dr.Dre Pro were not much for the D2000. Actually a bit off topic but i was really impressed with the soundstage of the D2000. i was blown away to be honest because i never heard of expensive full size cans. I was actually a bit sad that my iems cant much this soundstage.
Anyone heard an iem that can compare to this kind of soundstage.. My gr07 surely cant. How about the IE80?

Well, I do know about isolation, but my brother doesn't (noob LOL), and he said that all he wants is "noise-canceling" headphones. I agree with you when you said "most headphones don't cancel music but isolate - beats included." 
 
We both listen to all kinds of music (except classical). So...... I'd prefer not too bass-heavy ones.

Does he want isolating, or cancelling?  There is a difference.  Cancelling is an electronic mechanism composed of microphones and speakers (uses the drivers on the headphones) to invert what the mic "hears" to rid of the noise.  Isolation is non-electronic where you physically put something between your ears and the sound to block them

The point of owning headphones is music. If he wants just to block out the noise just get some earplugs.  Is he going to use the headphone outdoors in a portable situation? Is that why he needs it to be noise cancelling? If so, IEM's might work better for him, they will block out sound better than any noise cancelling headphones. And the good ones sounds very good...

If he wants to be medically deaf with his IEMs in (even noise cancelling headphones can do this ), get a pair of Etymotics and put on some foam tips (Aurisonics works too!).  Others may include ACS T15, MEElectronics A161p, Westone (most isolate well, I've only used the 4R), UE 500 (extremely bass heavy ), ThinkSound TS02 (MS01 works too).  I haven't personally used them, but Shure headphones will also isolate well.

people have very different opinion on what "doesn't cost much" .. so a number will help. 
 
I like westone. it fits me really well. Just look at their line up as they have iems for almost any budget.  I also like shure.  Heard great things about etymotics but never really used them.  I am currently using a reshelled tf10 and it sounds really good. (stock tf10 dont fit my ears all to well) I actually use the reshelled tf10 as an ear plug, when I go to the gun range, or when I watch concerts.

30-40 bucks?  Is he getting a studio for that price?  If so, he's getting ripped for a fake   Try something like the Dunu Trident.  Huge step over Beats.  Maybe even the Brainwavz M4s (when on sale) may be something good in the price range.

No he's not getting a studio for $40 lol. I showed him what IEMs were and he said he wants something stylish and not "ugly".
