Bass strings ended the year (and their life) with a "twang"!

So I was playing some Tool tonight and snapped the A-string of my roommate Jeff's 5 string Cort bass. (Was playing Vicarious, was just getting past the intro. Snapped the A-string on that chord at the 8th fret

) I'm probably going to talk him into taking me to the guitar store tomorrow to pick up some new ones (guitars and basses are even more tempting to me than speakers and headphones!

). Any suggestions on what I should look for? Never bought strings before.

The string I snapped was an "Elixer". The B-string is the original one the bass came with and it's looking pretty ratty, not to mention the Elixers are probably four years old now. So I figure I'll get a new 5-string set. I know nothing about the Elixers other than they were expensive. I never thought Jeff's bass sounded "amazing" so I assume the strings are supposed to be more comfortable to play, which isn't a concern of mine. Chances are I'll most likely pick up the cheapest set of strings I can find

Any advice about what to look for? I don't know anything about gauge or different windings etc. I play exclusively with my fingers, no pick. Slapping isn't a concern either.

I play primarily heavy metal; stuff like Tool, Metallica, RATM, sometimes I play some non-slap RHCP...etc. I actually have an extremely diverse musical taste, I play a lot of different types of music, but most of them tend to be heavier/faster paced. Sometimes I don't play anything in particular, just pick it up, don't even plug in the amp and just play something "wanky" (Devin Townsend reference

). I also love chords, I throw random chords in whenever I can get away with it

The funny thing is, I broke this string, looked at Corey (my guitarist roommate) whom I was jamming with and laughed, then looked at the time; it was midnight exactly, which meant it had just become my birthday. My first gift was broken guitar strings

Also I just re-strung Corey's Les Paul, after he broke his A-string, probably exactly 24 hours ago from now. His B-string was already gone but he was transposing around it, after the second one went he decided it was time to put on his new strings. I'll probably have re-strung two guitars in a two day period. Perhaps even three if I can manage to snap one or two of the ancient corroded strings on this old electric-acoustic of Corey's that I grabbed after snapping the bass
