I need a preamp, but I also have a balanced source and headphones to drive. I could go for having a balanced headphone amplifier with preamp outs, but I cannot spend too much. I was wondering how good would the idea of using a balanced M^3 with pre-outs work, and how much would it run me to have someone make one for me?

I believe it should work just fine. The M^3 is fully capable as a preamp. A balanced configuration with preamp stuff (selection switch?) should run ~$500 (including labor) and go up from there. I would guesstimate $600 would be a safe budget unless you demand boutique parts.

If you can build it yourself, it would be significantly cheaper.

I am not very confident in my building abilities. :-/

Awesome that this is a good possibility.
