When I was a horse-crazy little girl, saving up my pennies to one day get a horse, I saw an ad in the classifieds that read "Free Filly to Good Home"
Yeah, that horse was supposedly taken when I called, but the scheme was the horse was free in return for a promised boarding period at that stable of 6 months.
I do not reccommend any beginner do this. The horses were in bad bad shape, and the stalls themselves were fetlock-deep in mud and muck. The next week I did actually get a horse from this place. Mom saw me fall in love with this half-Arab yearling and said "oh alright." 14hh and 600lbs - skin and bone. She could still arch her neck and flag her tail though.
And that was my best friend through thick and thin. I got her the heck out of there after the 6 months, though. But this whole scheme is a bad idea and instead of rescuing her through buying her, we should have called the SPCA.
Later - the woman and her husband were convicted of child molesting. When she got out of jail she briefly had a stable elsewhere in the state, but I've heard she's back in her old location, and even was interviewed on the local news as a horse expert!
So parents - check this stuff out. It may have worked out well for me, but I was lucky.
