Hi folks!

Sennheiser has "Baby Orpheus" system -
HE 60/HEV 70, cans & driver unit.

Stax phones are good covered in the reviews here, but I didn't found Baby Orpheus review or Baby Orpheus vs. Stax comparisons here. Frankly, there are almost no reviews on Baby Orpheus on the web (there is only few)...
The only one comparison I found on the web - on some Russian hi-fi site (it was quite ago, so I lost the link:wink:, where Stax 303/404 and Baby Orpheus systems were compared. They gave their editor's choice to Baby Orpheus.

Did anybody here have experience with Baby Orpheus?

I believe that the amplifier is considered the weak point in the chain, regarding the baby Orpheus.
I remember reading comments such as, harsh top end etc.
If you check out Kevin Gilmore's amplifier articles at headwize
I believe he comments that the phones themselves have fine transducers and a lot of potential with the right amp.

The headphones actually sound better than the Omega2 Headphones, BUT ONLY when hooked up the to the Stax Omega2 Amp. With it's own amp, it's nothing special, it's just ok. Please note that you need a special adapter in order to do this.

Kevin Gilmore owns a pair of almost every single electrostatic headphones ever made, and his review of some of them can be found at:

www.headwize.com

Do a search there in the headphone reviews section and you should come up with the one by Kevin. He preferred the Omega II over the Baby O using the HE70 amp.

I saw Baby Orpheus for ~$1,600 on the web, let's say it's in Stax 404 - Omega II price league, that's not $15,000 for 'Big O', so I thinked that Baby Orpheus can be more availabale to the headfiers...

Wrogo... he was using the KGSS, and the HE70 is an electrostatic headphone that does not exist- you mean the HEV70; the Baby Orpheus headphones are the HE60 and the Big Daddy Orpheus headphones are the HE90. (the Orpheus amp, predictably, is the HEV90.)

I fyou want some info please PM myself or Vertigo-1 since we both bought one from Koji at EIFL. Either can give you some good advice and ideas on how to get one for a pretty good price. I'd rather not post publically on the price from Koji.

True, he finished with the KGSS, but he did comment on how the amp sounded using the HEV70 amp, and he didn't really like it. He wished they had more space to fit some decent caps in there.

Omega IIs are $1,825 @ audiocubes. At US dealers I hear they are insane more money.

Stax's website is http://www.stax.co.jp

These headphones are amp dependant and the Baby Orpheus with it's HEV70 amp is rough/grainy sounding compared to the 007t.

FWIW... I really like the 007t matched with the 404. Very nice sound, clean and clear details with a touch of tubie goodness.

Although, it does seem like the 007t tops out at about 1:00 o'clock on the volume knob after which, distortion starts to creep in. Lucky for me, loud for me is at 12.
