The PureDAC's balanced preamp is integrated with the DAC's current-to-voltage converter, which converts and filters the DAC's current, eliminating the need for an extra stage.  The Preamp and headphone amp both employ B.M.C's exclusive Load Effect Free (LEF) technology that handles a speaker's current demand separately from the voltage demand, increasing the preamp and amp's efficiency and the quality of its audio reproduction.

Here is some more info from BMC. 
 
Dimensions: 365 x 103 x 320 mm
Output Impedance:
    Balanced headphone < 1 Ohm
    Standard headphone about 100 Ohm*
* This is a new approach of a quasi balanced standard output with a floating mono GND. It sound clearly more quiet and dynamic compared to the standard solution.
Upsampling: None! Asynchronous upsampling is always a sound degrading procedure unless you need to reject a bigger amount of Jitter.
USB: Asynchronous of course, going even further: We managed to use a unified clock for the Sabre DAC and the USB, so the internal Sabre DPLL isn't needed.
DSD: One reason for the delay is the implementation of DSD. Hope it will be finished quickly.

The headphone amp has a very unique approach. Of course it uses our LEF circuit, therefore it is a single ended class A performance without a feedback loop. The amp itself is a part of the DAC's I/V converter, so the DAC goes directly to power without any extra stage. Usually you wouldn't use big transistors for a headphone amp due to their capacitive load and bandwidth; but in this configuration we need to perform the bandwidth limiting of the I/V converter. This means PureDAC is using 8A output devices (!!!) of a special and rare kind: Lateral MOSFET, known for fantastic sound quality (you can see by the specs), but having some problems of delivering very high power due to saturation limitations, which is true for speaker but never for headphone drive.
This is why we can enjoy all the sonic beauty of this solution without any drawback, and also dare to offer an output impedance close to zero, delivering a fantastic control!
The XLR line out uses an LEF vertical DMOS-FET stage. Unique and challenging any preamp available regardless of the price. 

PureDAC is designed for balanced use and any other use would be a waste. It is true high end and should be used and combined accordingly - once you see an inside photo you will understand how different it is.

Concerning the power it simply a question of impedance. The voltage range is always the same and due to the very low output impedance just the headphone determines the maximum power by it's current request. For low impedances like 32 Ohms you better don't use the very high volume levels.

PureDAC features our exclusive DIGM, so you don't need to worry about impedance / gain matching of headphones.

I was interested until I read that SE operation is a waste...considering I only run SE in my current rig.
 
 A NOS DSD DAC had my attention.

The statement is misleading. As what he is trying to express is the benefits of Balanced over Single Ended in using the same circuit design is so much better. That is not to say Single ended is not good, just balanced will be better. I spent a few hours with he designer at CES. To say that I was impressed with what he had to say about the design of this piece was an understatement. I am highly anticipating playing with this piece.

I hope this is not too forward asking here, but figure others may be interested to know as well: June has come and gone, and it still seems to be in preorder status. I contacted BMC a while ago about a technical questions, and they mentioned that the demand was already high and may result in delays... any news on what the new estimated window of availability may be?

Due to arrive sometime in July depending on transport time, which is by ship at this point. Ship transport is tough to estimate arrival time. But should be this month sometime.

The PureDAC drove a K1000 with excellent result. The output stage can handle more than enough current, so the maximum voltage never varies. The PureDAC has about 13Vrms at the balanced output which would result in 5W@32Ohm, or 560mW@300Ohm, or 280mW@600Ohm. This is more than enough for making your eardrums meet in the middle of your head.

The problem with the HE6 is not the power. In worst case you could drive it with a speaker amp... but in most cases it doesn't sound right. The reason is that the amps are not matched to those small powers. LEF amps can handle changing current demands better than standard amps. The HE6 has an absolutely flat impedance curve which is supposed to be easy to drive as long as you have enough power for low efficiency.

Any word on whether it'll run in both direct mode and integer mode via Mac OS? Put another way, will it run on Mac OS via USB with native drivers?
 
Also, I'm a little confused about the balanced input on the front. I'm operating with the understanding that you can have a cable termination that's either a single 4-pin XLR or a double 3-pin XLR. The images look like the only input is a single 3-pin?
