Aune B1 Headphone AMP worldwide review tour --Reviewers Wanted!

No it just means you need a separate converter for your digital signal. The Aune only acts as an amplifier, and a fairly good one at that.

I think that's what you're asking at least?

Well, the way I see it, say you hook your phone up to a pair of headphones, your phone has both a DAC & Amplifier inside it, albeit not usually a very good one. To bypass the internal amp & dac of your phone, the amp would need to accept an untouched digital sigbal. If it's analog, then it simply passes through your phone's dac & amp before passing through the Aune, creating a double amp, which is slightly more lossy and essentially just louder.

If, like you said, you use an external DAC, you're still using the amp inside your phone.

I don't see a way past this if the amp only accepts analog input.

Depending on the device in use.

Idevices (IOS) got line out dock (LOD) connection that bypasses the internal amp. Using LOD = internal dac + external amp.
By utilizing camera connection kit (CCK), an external dac can extract the raw audio files from inside the device, to be processed completely independent from the device.

I don't have android devices, but with their ever-going competition (IOS vs android) I'd imagine android got more or less the same solutions.

Oh and by the way:

That's not the case. An external dac extract the raw digital data of audio files from the device, the 0 and 1. If going by that logic, then the connection would be: device => external dac => back to device (so the dac can use the internal amp of the device) => output (headphone or speaker). Might be do-able, but never ever heard of something like this.

But modern iOS devices can't use an LO connector (unless that's changed in the last 6 months). Lightning connectors don't support lightning to 3.5mm

I might've been wrong on the Dac because I've never owned a DAC only device. I didn't know if they sent digital or analog out. I assumed it would still need to pass through the internal amp somehow to make noise. Since amplifiers can accept digital, couldn't it go amp->dac->hp out?

Or am I totally wrong on that and Amps only accept analog input?

It sounds like I would need a seperate DAC to make use of this.

Ah i see, you were specifically talking about the iphone. Sorry I didnt catch that. Yea I think the only way around it is to have a separate DAC. There are a lot of very small DACs that are no bigger than a flash drive these days that you can connect your devices to without adding much more heft to it. Of course it is a bit more annoying having to add more to an audio stack when portability comes to mind.

Lightning connector? Apple's original lightning connector to 30 pin adapter contains its own DAC chip inside, the wolfson WM8533. Dunno the exact release date, but this article was posted in 2012 (not in the last 6 months): http://gizmodo.com/5950947/first-look-at-whats-inside-apples-new-dock-adapter-its-basically-impossible-to-mod

To use it as an LOD, just connect the two together (dunno if the adapters in the pictures were original or not):

A DAC only device would only output at line level. This is a fixed voltage value signal with low current (ampere). The voltage value might blow sensitive IEMs right away. Headphones shouldn't be blown away, but then it won't have enough current, resulting in distortion north and south. Also DACs line level output usually got high output impedance, because it's originally designed to be plugged to an amp input.

Amps only process analog signals. That's just the way it is. When a device is capable of both converting digital signal to analog, and amplify it so it's adequate to power headphones, it's called a dac/amp combo.

Alright, so this means I should probably resign from the other aune tour, since all I have is an iphone 6 and PC as a source. Don't want to have buy another few cables.

Question from a potential tourist...

Is the "leather" on the B1 real  or synthetic? Most websites I've looked at say pleather, but some say real leather (and it does LOOK real).

Thanks in advance.
