I continue to go back and forth over which one I like better. I swear the answer is whichever one I currently have on my head, cuz I find things I love about BOTH of them. If only they came in a portable, I'd be done for the next few years til I had major disposable income
At the current reduced priced of 400 US, the Nightowl is an awesome buy. After I put my EQ set on it, I just love this headphone. It has such a smooth response. There is no harshness, grain, or sibilance present. It is a great headphone that allows the listener to just sit back and enjoy the music. The soundstage is amazing for a closed back. It honestly sounds like an open back heapdhone. It you blindfolded someone, and put this headphone on them, they would not be able to tell it is a closed back. It is a unique headphone, and more people should give it a try. For that person, golfinggino, who said they have a friend who is offering them a new Nightowl for 200, you should buy that immediately. This was a 700 US headphone a year ago !!!! You would be insane not to buy it. It is not a 200 dollar headphone. It is not even close to that low of a price for the performance it offers. I have my Nightowl and Amiron Home headphones both paired with an Audio-GD C-2 (2017 Edition) headphone amp. This is a completely neutral headphone amp, and it really brings out the best of both of these headphones. To anyone interested in buying, just note that this is a very powerful headphone amp. Be reasonable when using, as it has more than enough power to damage your hearing. It pairs perfectly with the Nightowl, and provides excellent synergy.
I just wanted to post the slightly updated EQ for both sets of pads as well. After burn in, I never put these up. People should give these a try. I think you will be very impressed with the improvements. There is a huge difference from the stock tuning. Everything in the frequency response sounds completely balanced.
I actually like the NightOwl cable, but was thinking of getting another so I have an alternative. I'm not into the voodoo pricing either and these guys are some of the best I've found for pricing: https://oidiosound.co.uk/headphone-cables/other-brands.html
I have used a $10 cable from Ebay for almost two years on my NH because the NH came with cables that had serious problems ... like the end breaking off my long one during the first week! AQ sent me the rubbery one you have and I hate it. I continue to use my ebay one from China that I had picked up to use "temporarily" when the first one broke. The one I have comes in different lengths. I have the 1.8m one and had recently bought the 1.2m because I do have daps that power the NH if I want to walk around the house (I don't take it out). I need to rebuy that 1.2m as my husband needed it for his Oppo PM-2. Mine is from a listing for the Sennheiser HD497 (and other models). You can also search for Sennheiser HD700 and of course the Oppo PM -2. I will find my listing as I need another and edit this post with it. Actually it is probably in this thread already a few times..maybe I will just search the thread.
I am going to buy one of these today... 1.2m..6 available. There is one 1.8m left as well. This cable is soft and flexible and the black connectors to the earcups look nice with the color of the cups. No mic... I never use a mic. If you need a mic version you will need to search a bit more.
I know someone ordered one that looks like that and said the cable was stiff. Try to look at the photos and imagine how flexible it may or may not be. Do you need a mic?
