Carbons looks nicer. Band is nicer and the suspension a little tighter for more sure fit. No smell. Initial impressions is better sound from full leathers vs other two types.

Less v-shape signature. E_Schaaf has seemed to accomplish this with some tiny tweaks. I was just messing around before copying his plans.

The Nighthawk is definitely not what we would commonly call "V-shaped". Warm yes, definitely. V-shaped, not really.
It has bass/lower mids emphasis with a wide bump from 60 to 800 Hz (!), and then recessed upper mids/lower treble froom 800 to 4500 Hz.
I'm guessing you mean "less bass/lower mids emphasis".

I'm just surprised that you are putting so much effort/risk into modding them physically when you could achieve a better result by just EQing them.

November 1st will be five years I have owned my Nighthawks, and they are still as stinky as the day I got them. I always put them back into their original case when done listening.
All this talk of mold is making me wonder if I should peek inside, but don't know how they could get moldy in a room with a dehumidifier running 24-7.

I have owned my Nighthawk Carbon for almost 1 year now, and my Nighthawk Wood for almost 9 months.
None of them has ever stinked or smelled, not even slightly.
Your issue can't be normal, unfortunately. I hope you can have them checked somehow.

If you browse this thread from the early days, you will read about lots of folks with stinky Nighthawks, it was a regular thing. Mine just seem to wanna stay stinky, lol.

It’s a known fact cup resonances can cause peaks and dips in the fr response. If you don’t believe it, look at CSD measurements of the Nighthawk before and after cup damping with wool like materials.

Resonance and reflection control is goal of mod. Two methods is weight and filters. Another strategy is to possibly overdamp the driver to reduce its bass output.

Hi res photos of “mold” I posted on other forums met responses of “not mold”. Smell is something else then. Cleaned with a commerical anti mold solution, vinegar, and borax. Smell I feel has been significantly reduced. That or I am sniffing chemicals instead.

ASR members don’t believe cup resonance makes an audible difference, lol.

Damping driver more. Testing from exterior. Next would be sealing up edges of cups where meets front baffle as there are air leaks there.

I love the sound of my Hawks too much to mess with such mods for I don't know how much difference in SQ...

Also... I just found out that the jack on my Pixel 3a is finally able to drive the NHCs just fine on its own without a dongle. I had tried a few times when I first got them but volume was too low somehow. With all my HPs. By accident I discovered that if you first start the music on the phone , in whichever app you use, and THEN plug in the phones another sound output is activated somehow and the power from the jack is multiplied. Damn, the Pixel actually sounds better than my Xiaomi Mi A1 which was considered a very audiophile phone by many. More power as well. Deeper bass, gentler highs, clean, detailed, wow. I did a search and found out that the Snapdragon 670 inside actually has a thing called Qualcomm AQstic tech that makes the sound better...
Such blissful sound from just a phone and a headset! First big can purchase since my youth years and those plastic Philips junks and probably the last for me.
