AudioQuest NightHawk Impressions and Discussion Thread

If making money is no longer a priority, then yeah, I agree. How many people still buy exotic cables? I'm sure they pulled a in a few bucks with the NightHawk and NIghtOwl. Did Skylar own the patents? If not, they could copy the design and move forward.
They probably make much more money on cables. Just look at those prices. Headphones was just an experiment project for AQ.
Without another talented headphone engineer it is impossible to develop a NH2 (if possible at all). These kind of gentlemen (gentlewomen) are hard to find.

They should ask Paul Barton, like NAD did.

Probably they didn't make enough profit on headphones to justify further investments of money/energy.
Also, NH's design is really unique. Very much 'one' with Skyler himself.
Bit of an exaggeration, but you can't ask another painter to paint the next Picasso picture. That just won't be right.

Does anyone have a feel for how this will affect pad availability down the road?

I'd say none available soon

Since no retail outlet sells them, I’d guess there’s not much stock to begin with.

At least we can put on non-AQ pads. Still, very sad.
And no more AQ headphones???

I bought myself a spare set of the hybrids, because I think it might be hard to find them in the years to come. If you find a set, I would buy them.

Where did you get your hybrid pads from?

The original Nighthawks pads are considered the hybrid pads, right????? And what ships now with the Nightowl if I were to grab a pair?
They come with all pleather Boost pads. Raises the treble a few db, as well as the Microsuede pads, which reduce the lower freq a bit

Yes, you are right. The hybrid pads come with the original Nighthawk only (woody-look). With the Nighthawk Carbon and the Nightowl you get the full pleather pads and the microsuede pads.

I never knew.. I thought the carbon edition come with both the original pads and a set of alternative pads, not aware it's 2 set of alternative pads.

I never had the chance to audition either edition, but am curious about the "speaker like" sound character of the original pads. So how are the alternative pads feel like in this regard?

I missed the last sales of the original NH, and was thinking about getting the carbon edition some time in the future, but it seems a now or never situation at the moment.
