Audio Technica updates their open headphones "AD" Series: AD2000x, AD1000x, AD900x, AD700x and AD500x

Anyone have their AD700x around?  I was mixing and matching too many pads and foams and felts and aren't sure if the AD700x has a foam disc that goes between the ear pad and your ear or if it's open (other than the thin screen on the ear pad).

My (unmodded) AD700 (no X) does not have a foam disk, only the thin screen on the ear pad. I do not own an AD700X, and I do not know whether it has a foam disk there.

Just use them naturally till you feel that they're at their best. Normally the burn-in time is about 50-100 hours, maybe 200 or more. On my AD1000X it was about 50 hours, but we've debated a lot on burn-in and now I'm not even sure if it exists at all.

Should i buy ad1000x or ad2000x.
How many percent ad2000x better than ad1000x ?

Lol I'll let you know, except it's been years and I'm using a different amplifier.
Also I had the ad2000, not the ad2000x.

Trigger pulled though, should be a great match for my old bel canto dac2 > mf x-cans/psu system.
Better than trying yet another hd650 anyways

I've heard that the AD1000x and AD2000x are very similar except that the AD2000x has more forward mids, and the AD1000x is the much better bang for the buck. Is this true or are there other differences?

My AD1000X arrived today. Unlike my AD700 the earcups aren't oval-shaped, and are more round, making them uncomfortable. Has anyone else had this problem? And is there somewhere I can order the more oval-shaped earcups from Audio-Technica?

I thought the AD700 pads were also circular. I swapped my AD2000 pads with my old AD700 pads and they're pretty much the same.

Anyway, you can e-mail AT about particular pads and they can send some to you for a small price. Or if you still have your AD700, you can just swap the pads yourself.

Well I just got some Brainwavz HM5 Velour pads for my AD1000x and it sounds good.   These pads are much thicker than OEM pads thus it adds distance and seems be made less airy;  in the end it increases the soundstage and bass increases a bit too.  So far I'm enjoying it, but it take a bit of work to put them on.  You really need to put on about a 1/4" at time, since they need to stretch to fit onto the rim.

Good to know as my ears barely fit, and if they get any bigger the stock pads will become uncomfortable but for now it's all good. I don't remember my old AD2000's being this tight. IMO these are a great all around headphone, and I would agree that they are a better value than those AD2K's which were very nice in their own right.

I listened to the AD1000x for a while and compared them with my AD700. The AD1000X is obviously better, but by how much? Surprisingly, not a lot. Maybe I underestimated diminishing returns, but the only real differences in sound to me was the AD1000x being more forward (which supports vocals and mids), cleaner more refined treble, and superior accuracy. There might have also been a touch more bass but it's practically the same, and both are bass-light headphones anyway. If you want the best out of your music, I think it's worth the jump in price, but only if you're sure you wouldn't prefer other headphones around the same cost.

Something that really bothered me about the AD1000x was that the comfort got worse. The drivers aren't angled so it's easier for them to touch your ear, and the opening in the earpad is small and circular which makes it hard to get a good seal. Loosening the clamp and getting new pads should fix this for most people, but it was still disappointing for a $300 headphone. Without these fixes, the headphone isn't comfortable at all.

Compared to other lines of headphones, I feel like each step in the AD line isn't as big. Maybe that's why Audio-Technica makes some of the best low-price headphones around while their expensive offerings aren't that popular. I do love the R70x though.
