Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 Discussion Thread

From what I've learned reading this forum I can confirm that mine MSR7LTD are not fake ones.
I guess harshness is just its sound signature of sorts.

Yes.

If you like "bright" then you'll love the MSR7.
If you want a much much better reference sound, nearly audiophile flat, tho open back, then get the R70X.
The R70x is AudioTechnica's attempt to make a really really good Sennheiser sound.
Mission accomplished.

I think perhaps volume settings help.

I adjust for presence in the mids and then back down if the headphone is 'shouty'.

I also think that I must have adjusted to its sound because I find so many other small closed headphones that I have lacking now as a result of using it for a while.

(Momentum on ear, over ear 1 and 2, Vmoda m100, Sony mdr 1a) amongst others ....

They are good for hi res. I don't think they are a step up from the AT.

They are easily driven though.

The MSR 7 is a more sensical upgrade from the M50x, at least when compared to M70x, those, have quite different sound.

What do you think about hm5 hybrid pads for MSR-7? Everyone is talking about velour and pleather and alcantara pads but noone mentioned aboud hybrid pads :) maybe hybrid will be good choice for that headphones - better comfort with similar sound :)

I have the HM5 hybrids, and based on my experience of putting them on my M40x, it has the effect of lessening the bass, the vocal got put more on the back, and treble is heightened, also the added distance make the sound overall more "diffused", that combination breaks the sounds of the M40x IMO, and I think anyone that likes MSR7's stock sound doesn't want the same thing to happen to theirs as well...
For replacement pad that improve comfort and build while still retains the sound of the original I'd point people to Yaxi St pads.

Got it connected to FiiO Q1. Tried different sources - Macbook Air, S7 Edge, Sony NWZ-A15, iPad Air2. The best noticeable difference in SQ was having it connected to MB Air as DAC and S7 Edge through OTG cable.
Sounds more balanced across the range, highs and mids are not so pronounced anymore. The impression is that sound-stage opens up a bit. To conclude - it's got less fatiguing and annoying thus I can enjoy music longer.
Have no other amp or DAC to compare to, yet I'm perfectly fine with MSR7 + Q1 setup for now.

Agree, the Q1 is perfectly fine DAC/AMP to pair with MSR7, and with the bass boost switch, you can add more weight when you want them (ie movie watching, gaming, etc)
