My Etymotic ER4S headphones where stolen this week. This forced me into looking into headphones and my tastes. I found that I enjoyed the Etymotics immensely. For there detail, clarity, and naturalness. They in my eyes where the most perfect headphones for me. Despite a couple major flaws. The first being how lacking they are in low end. I by no means am a bass head. But I do listen to very bassy music. Such as Techno and Trip Hop. With this music the Ety's felt lacking. Sure they where the most detailed and accurate headphones I had heard. But with some of my favorite music they felt lacking in power and overall..oomf. Which left me with a lack of interest. The second problem for me was there soundstage. They..to me just dont have any. I like headphones that have a very open airy separated sound to them. Etymotic's ER4's at times. Felt kind of cluttered to me.

I began looking for a pair of headphones that would combine both worlds of what I love. A pair of headphones that would be detailed and accurate, but with a rich and powerful bass. Nuetral and flat, but separated and airy. I came across the Audio Technica IM03 and, began reading reviews. Most importanlty this one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2687655 From reading that review. I gathered that the IMO's would sound perfect for me. As if they would take what I love from my ety's and combine it with what I need/want in a pair of headphones.

But then I learned that Etymotic has in fact released two updated versions of the ER4S. One featuring more low end. Now. I am at a crossroads. I am afraid to buy the IM03's because I am not for sure if they can compare with the Etymotics. I could just buy an updated pair of the ER4S headphones. And have the same headphones I had. But with some improvements. And thats fine. I just feel like the IM0's would be an overall upgrade for me personally. In so many areas. I feel like I would enjoy the IM0's a lot more. Do to them being having more space and air. With the same rich detailed clarity love in my favorite pair of headphones. Etymotic ER4S.

Somy questions are.

How does the IMO3 truly sound? Does its detail compare at all to the ER4S or worse.
How bassy are they? Does the bass bleed and overpower? Or is it simply just enough?
Are they good headphones at all compared to the ER4S series? How do they weigh up.
I have heard them compared to the HD600's. Are they like those?
What is the soundstage like on the IM03's? How about the isolation?

Would I be better off just getting a updated pair of Etymotics? Or do the IMO3's fullfill the roles I need in a pair of headphones.

Roles being
Detailed analytical sound. Mostly Neutral or completely Neutral,
Rich deep and powerful bass but not bassy or overpowering. Bass with a body.
Harmony between highs lows mids.
Soundstage and seperation.

The IM03 is a wonderful IEM. Neutral-warm, with splendid treble sparkle, tremendous bass, even sub-bass, and wonderfully detailed and natural vocals and mids. The soundstage is pretty good. Certainly not small or closed-in. And there's fantastic air in the mix. The bass is elevated a bit, though it never bleeds over or muddies the other frequencies.

Here's my review, if you're interested.
