candidate: audio technica ath-fc7
type: overhead, supra aural, portable
cost: $59 + oversea shipping
testing gear: chaintech av710 sound card -> DIY interconnect -> super mini amp
disclaimer: right out of the box, no burn in, my own musical taste
built: the build quality is quite decent. the grey color headband make it look cheap. the earcup is 7cm in diameter. there is a comfort issue. the driver sits right on top of your ears and can be very uncomfortable. i truly recommend some kind of earpads modding like putting cottons beneath the earpads so it move your ears away from the driver. they clamp pretty well so won't fall off your head easily. they aren't small enough to put in your pocket as whole though.
sound: the low bass is very punchy and a have a bit of groove to it. a whole ton of midbass, they also pack quite a punch. not too much upper bass though. the bass is very energetic. i dont think they are overtaking like the ex71 or v6. the low to mid mids for vocals is a bit dark sounding. upper mids are more refined. it can be raw and a bit emphasize. treble is balanced and clear, except the highest treble where its a bit roll off, but overall they're not lacking.
overall: very bass driven, though i dont think they kill the details of the music. i can listen to soft rock with these and they sound relaxing, when switched to electronica/industrial they become very energetic. the sound is very engaging and fun to listen to. ears that are too sensitive to bass might get fatigue over a long listening session.
value: $59 + shipping = $70-75 i think is too much. getting it for $60 is decent, but if lower then great.
