I need help deciding between these two headphones. I've researched and researched, but seem to only get confused more.

I will be using either one of these headphones from my computer which has a Sondigo Inferno sound card. I listen to classic rock, rock, some metal and also 80's songs. These will also be used for gaming (mostly counter strike: source). Sound quality in music is much more important to me then sound quality in gaming, but I want them to have good 3D positioning to hear foot steps and things like that. Also closed vs. open doesn't matter to me either. So which one should I go with? I was going to get the ATH-A900, but I hear they lack mid range which the AD900 is supposed to fix. The AH-D2000 would be stretching my budget a little, but if they are worth the extra I guess I can fit it in. Your opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Of course you get confused. Search and yee shall find more confusion. That's life. That's Head-fi. That's normal. Nobody has the knowledge nor the words to express when it comes to taste.
Head-fi made me buy DT880's, which turned out to be exactly what I didn't want (except for comfort).
Good luck anyway...

The association between head-fi, life, and the norm scares me..

Don't be startled too much. It hit me like a rock also when I found out. But it is there, it is real and you can survive. I am living proof.

A perfect thread for me - I'm also very curious about the relative performance of the AD900 and the D2000. Thanks for starting the thread. Now, if we can get someone to throw in a comparison to the MS1 and MS2 along with the above two...

I have the Technica ATH-A700's and the D2000's. I never get tired of the Denon's and their awesome feel on my head and ears. I would recommend the Denon's for the headphones you would enjoy the most. I haven't read but one person who didn't think they were great headphones for the money.

i have only the Senn 595's and D-2000's to compare. For comfort i love the ah-2000's. Primarily that is why i use them for gaming compared to the Senns. For music they are far better than my Senn's (listen mostly to Hip-Hop/rock). I'm so happy with my Denons By the praise on this board, this is the can to have if you're a newb like me.

I went to a company sponsored LAN party and i used my Senns cause they are open and the cable management was better when I put them around my neck.

Hey mate.

Did the Total Airhead (in your sig) make the Denon's sound any better/worse? Have you tried them with/without it?

I'd like to know what an amp around that price range does for the Denon's.

many people push the denon ah2000 as a headphone that sounds ok without an amp. But being pushed from an 3g Ipod and an SB X-fi (no mods) they sounded underpowered to me (compared to my HD595's). Now with the airhead the bass is more responsive and tight. at medium to higher volumes the sound waaay better than the Senn's now. The bass is incredible and so are the mids. i love this can!. good thing too, cause it's saving me alot of money. I feel lucky to have found a good can so early in my newbiness.

I've compared the AD2000 and D5000... liked the AD2000 a lot better, the D5000 and D2000 as well have got a recessed lower midrange, or overpowered by the mid bass, whatever you want to call it.

When a headphone screws up the midrange, it's instantly out of the playing field for me.

lots of people getting screwed up with these threads misunderstanding things...

-One person said that the ad900 was a step up from the a700...WRONG, they are a different line of headphones. It might sound better, sure, but the A series is the ART series(closed design) the AD is the AIR series(Open Back)... Do not get confused

-One poster might have gotten confused by 003s comments too. The AD2000 is an audio technica while the D2000 is the denon. I thought it was clearly stated by 003 that he prefers the ad2000 to the more colored denons (D5000 and D2000).

People getting confused here hehehe
