Oh, I did not know the A900X was aluminum.
 
The AD700 is plastic while the AD900 is magnesium, and the difference in sound is easily worth the price. From what I've heard regarding the A700 vs A900 (not the "X" versions), they were pretty close in sound. So, I'm not entirely sure which I'll get. Amazon's got to get the A900X back in stock, first, before I even start deciding. But like I said, if the difference is a similar improvement the AD700 to the AD900 saw, I'm all in. Guess we'll never know though, since nobody has both. (I think there may be like a whole two people than own the A700X).

Well I know for a fact the reason why the highs and mids are so rich n smooth on the A900X is because of the Aluminum. I am thinking the A700X will have the same sound tuning as the A900X but will not be as clean or extended as well as them. Just a guess but Aluminum dampening on earphones do the same thing.

I am still quite new to this, but I have tried both the 700X and 900X in a side by side comparison. I think the differences are small enough that unless you are listening for them, you will not hear them.
 
As mentioned, the material is a little different. I (personally) find that the construction of both feel "cheap", and could not justify the price increase for the 900X. I ended up buying the 700X.

Ya AT does this with their earphones as well.  For example the CKM33 and the CKM77. Both have the exact same sound tuning.. But. the CKM77 uses a hybrid aluminum material for dampening and cost about a $100 more than the CKM33. The sound is much more refined over the cheaper sibling. More cleaner, more extended, more defined. For a casual listener I don't think they will be able to tell them apart too much but for me the overall refinement was worth the extra to get a higher end version. 
 
There is a reason why AT has their headphones and earphones priced like they do. Material means more refinement in the end..AT uses a lot of light metal material to get precision. I know the A700X will sound similar but where the difference will be heard will be in instruments and the clarity in vocals.. I think if casual listening is what these headphones will be used for than a A700X will be fine but for me why not get the more refined version. All I know is I love my A900X and they have taken over my D2000 for headphones since almost day one of listening to them. 
 
When I ordered mine last year the price difference between the A700X and the A900X was only $50 but at $100 less that is a good deal for a revised version of the A700. I am sure Katun will be able to tell the difference between the A700X and the A900X however.. I don't think my A900X feel cheap at all. They are sturdy and has some substance to them. Lovely cans in all aspects actually.

I would value the A900X's at around ''$80'' give or take 20 dollars ''better'' than the A700X's.  (Totally meaningless and arbitrary I know).
 
But with that said, if you can get the A700X's for $100 cheaper, then it really depends how much you value the incremental increase in sound quality.  The A900X's are almost the same as the A700X's, but it just does everything better.

Okay, just ordered the A900X. The seller I was looking at went down to $240 from $260, so I ordered it one day shipping.
 
I'm contemplating getting the K550 for comparing as well. EDIT: Just ordered the K550 too. Sigh. This hobby...

Would anyone mind telling me/measure for me how large the earpads is? I'm trying to get some other ear pads for my T50RP, and I've been thinking that any of the Axx00 or ADxx00 series' ear pads might fit.

10.4 cm in diameter (measured directly on the headphones without removing them). The inner hole (for your ears) measures 5 cm in diameter.

The differences are certainly there and large enough that I recommend the A900X over the A700X with confidence.  As for a $100 difference, I would say its worth it but others may not.
