Audio-Technica ART Monitor Series Refreshed: A2000Z, A1000Z, A900Z, A500Z

The open counterparts have a lot of competition these days but the closed full size category at these price levels are not as common. I cant even think of any at the moment that competes in the 400 dollar range with the 1000z except for some fostex cans.

any measurements on these anywhere? I am really interested in seeing the relative measurements of the w1000z, a1000z, and a2000z

Tyll from Innerfidelity just review the A2000Z today. He has measurements posted as well.

Hey everyone,

the girlfriend and I recently got to try both the 1000Z and 2000Z at one of the rare audio events here in Stockholm, and she's actually taken interest in them, which is somewhat rare - I got to try both for around five minutes, and my initial impressions (albeit driven from my phone) were that the 1000Z sounded a bit smoother and the low-end was more upfront, while the 2000Z seemed more focused on detail retrieval.

Now I've got the chance to buy either of the two for essentially the same price over the course of next week, and I can't find anywhere that's reviewed both of them either side-by-side, or separately at all.

Does anybody here own both, or has recollection of comparing them on a decent setup (maybe comparable to my NFB-11 or her SMSL Sanskrit-FiiO E09k combo)? If so, what's your impressions?

I, too, would like to know this.

Actually, how would I go around modding the A2000z? Would it be possible to make it compatible with Sennheiser HD650 cables?

Just getting an A900z (japan import),

They use much lower quality plug than A900x and AD700 , really wanna replace plug with some high grade Rhodium plug.

Oh yeah, that's A2000X's successor, alright, hahahaha!

Too much trouble, I think.  If you want to look into it, Sennheiser's proprietary connectors for HD650 are based on a type of radio/medical connector.  Last time I looked into those years ago, I couldn't find a way to buy only a couple of standalone connectors for modifications, the companies that make them only sell them by the hundreds.
I would recommend looking through Farnell, Newark, and Digikey for some very small 2.5mm PCB-mount/surface-mount/through-hole connectors that you think you might want to improvise with and install in the headphone.
Or add Neutrik NYS240BG connectors on the headphone cable just a few inches away from where the cable exits the cups, then any replacement cables would simply need 3.5mm plugs for the headphone ends.

I got myself an A1000z and I fell in love instantly but the highs are peircing and all sibilance is really exaggerated. Are there any mods that could help with this or should I get my ears checked?

Your ears are fine, that's the signature sound of the A1000Z. If they would have the highs from the A2000Z, they would be perfect.

Would getting a A2000z be redundant for me? I already own a Final Sonorous VI.

I figured as such, but I had the same issue with so many other headphones I have to wonder if I’m either etremely sensitive to treble or I have something going on physically that exaggerates sibilance. I even hear uncomfortable sibilance in the HD650 of all cans sometimes

Hmm, no, I don't believe you're to sensitive. Your ears/brains are just tuned to focus on highs. Many headphones have sibilant highs, some are just tuned to sound bright. The MSR7 have one of the most accurate highs, maybe even more accurate than A2000Z. I didn't listen to the HD650, however I did compare the HD600 to the MSR7, RX70 and the W1000. When pushed high, the HD600 did sound annoyingly sibilant to me. So it's just a matter of perspective. I would have picked A1000Z instead of the A2000Z, but the sibilant highs were the deal breaker.
