just saw the news at Akihabara news.com site. they will be released at the end of August:

Audio Technica's ATH-EP700
This morning Audio Technica Japan announced the end of August nationwide availability of their latest over-the-head headphone with a 40mm diameter driver unit, an impedance of 47Ω, and an output of 102dB/mW.

According to the Babelfish translation of this page, they are supposed to be open, if I'm understanding it correctly. I'm quite curious as to where they're supposed to stand in AT's product lineup. At JPY6980, they would appear to be cheaper than the ES7s.

They look like open ES7s. I wish that AT would release some limited woodies like they did in olden times. I feel like I missed the boat on the W11JPN, etc.

AT's 50th is in 2012 so expect something big then. In the interim there may be some type of W5000 update.

wow I just bought a pair of ES7 and now I'm wishing I hadn't as I love open versus closed phones...

I will be eagerly waiting reviews of these as I love my AD700 phones.
