First time poster here (but been lurking for a while).
Recently aquired a MF V-DAC which I love but I am hearing a significant hiss is quiet parts and between songs- not the recording. It happened with my Musiland as well (V-DAC is an improvement BTW). All system volumes are at 100% (turning down has no effect). I have my cheap audio card disabled and I have Vista running 48000Hz at 16 bits (max).
Is there something I am missing?
Thanks,
Tim

I had a problem with hiss with Vista X64 when setting format to 16 bits. 24 bits remove the hiss. Hz setting didn't change the noise. I had to change to 24 bits although 99% of my files are 16. Using foobar+wasapi removed the issue with 16 bits hiss. Does the hiss continue if you pause music on your player? That happened to me. Only stopped when really stopping the track.

So I don't know how to solve the problem but you can bypass it through wasapi. It worked for me.

Using a xonar dx spdif optical out and CA Dacmagic.

I show only 16 bit (with various Hz)- no 24 bit option in my sound settings. I don't have a clue what your other solution is- I'm not that literate with computer settings, can you explain? I have Vista 32bit btw.

Ok. I'm talking about the options that are in control panel, sound, digital out, properties, advanced settings tab. I got hiss when setting this option to 44100 16 bit. Setting 44100, 24 bit didn't produce hiss.

An option to bypass this problem is using foobar with wasapi output. Download foobar, download wasapit ouput support from foobar's page download section. Copy file in foobar's components folder. Then in foobar's preferences go to playback, output, wasapi digital out or similar.

Watch out. Set volume in foobar to minimum before playing anything. The signal has way more strength and is not controlled by windows or soundcard.

My options in control panel do not include 24 bit playback (its not supported). I installed Foobar and run playback with WASAPI with no effect on the hissing. I am wondering if USB has anything to do with it.
Any more thoughts?
Thanks again.
