Audeze - Maxwell Gaming Headsets! (latest: Firmware v74 and HQ v126 - Sep 2024)

Here's some Preset news to tide you guys over.

Now guys, this is all I can share for now.

Instead of refreshing the old Presets found on the Mobius, we have a new line of presets I think you guys will find interesting and usable. Even a non-EQ snob like me (I typically never touch EQ) may be surprised by how good these are.

1. Audeze - Our intended default target for Maxwell
2. Treble Boost - Make no mistake, this is NOT just a treble boost, and firmly believe you guys will want to really pay attention to this one.
3. Bass Boost - self explanatory, and like treble boost is not JUST a bass bump. This is one is the warmer/smoother/richer, more body preset. If you like a softer treble, this one is for you.
4. Immersive - This one is my personal favorite non-default preset, and plays well for casual/action/atmospheric games, IMHO. Think single player games where competitive focus is not the priority. It shares aspects of both bass and treble boost presets, with its own flavor.
5. Competition - This is the high detail preset focused on enhanced clarity of mid to treble ranges, for added air, and focus on where most details lie. If you know me from my headphone guide and which kind of sound I would rate highly for competitive play, you should have an idea.
6. Footsteps - This is a more focused/targeted response based on gameplay audio analysis.
7, 8, 9, 10 - Your own custom presets.
Great. There was me desperate for more info - now it’s arrived it’s making the wait/delay even harder 😜

Appreciate the info though. The range of Eq options certainly seems a good step up from Penrose.

Understood, I wanted confirmation that there is no explicit action that the user can take to return to the previous menu. It is done for you passively after an idle time.
Correct. Well, not fully. I mean you can double press to go to EQ, then single press top wheel to go to previous/next, or single press lower wheel to go into sidetone adjustment, or double press the lower wheel to go into sidetone on/off, or single press MFB button for AI noise reduction cycling. All which will obviously kick you out of the first thing you were adjusting. But as far as DEFAULT actions of volume control or game/chat mix, yes you have to idle a few seconds. ANY function that requires pressing in either wheel inward...you'll have to wait a few seconds for the beep to go back to the default wheel action.

For example: double press top wheel to EQ select, then if I immediately double press lower wheel which puts me in sidetone on/off, I'm immediately on that function. Don't do anything a few seconds, beep, and you're back to default actions.

Believe me, it's much more simple in practice,

It's challenging enough to introduce as many features as the Maxwell is supposed to have without introducing a large amount of physical controls (which can also be overwhelming), so I understand the pragmatic approach here. I'll wait to have it in my hands before making early judgment.

So when the headset comes out, our options will be Audeze presets that we have 0 visibility into or we have to make our own from scratch? Is there no way to make a copy of the Audeze presets and tweak them?
If the EQ profiles are saved on the headset itself, then I can of course measure them compared to the default frequency response similar to this:

They are certifying the headset itself from what I understand. The firmware will be worked on separately
And how will microsoft be able to check the correct work of the security chip without working firmware?

Can we make bets when it will be in our hands? I say for the Xbox at this rate...hmmm...I say April if nothing has been submitted.
I also think that the shipment of xbox versions of the headset will be around mid/late March or early April

If you stop adjusting for a few seconds, it will go back to the default wheel action which is volume control. You'll hear a subtle beep anytime you stop adjusting any function that isn't the default volume wheel (top) or game/chat mix (bottom). You get 5 seconds or so to begin adjusting shortcut functions like EQ. As you're adjusting, the timer isn't going down. So say you adjust EQ, then stop for 3 seconds then adjust again, you have 5 seconds again. It's AFTER the 5 seconds of NOT adjusting anything that you'll hear the default action beep.
Wouldn't a separate button for changing equalizer modes be easier ergonomically? Let's say entering the eq switching mode is a long press, changing modes is fast, confirm mode is a long press.

Hey Mad Lust Envy,

Will this still affect the Maxwell headset regarding the EQs?

When I tried some EQ presets on the Penrose, the drop in overall volume was a little too much so I just decided to stick with the default.

Audeze doesn't have production release firmware yet, but I'm sure they have at least beta firmware, probably a release candidate at this point

My Penrose are still going strong.

Watched the “Billy Joel: Live at Shea Stadium” Blu-ray using them last night. No other wireless headset that I’ve used comes close so far as sound quality goes.

Magnificent! Highly recommend this Blu-Ray to any Billy Joel fan, casual or otherwise.
is there a drastic difference with using them on some FLAC or ALAC files?

Any and ALL shipping updates will be on the FAQ page first. I understand you guys are anxious, but again: ANY and ALL updates will be on the FAQ page FIRST.

This means, please check the FAQ page for shipping updates. If there's no updates there, there's no updates.

As for Preset switching, not sure if it was on this thread, but we had mentioned that changing presets on the headset is by double pressing the volume wheel inwards which puts you in EQ selection (you'll hear the "EQ" prompt), and you have a few seconds to adjust the wheel up/down for EQ presets. As long as you're adjusting it, it will not default back to volume, but after a few (5 or so seconds) of not adjusting anything, you'll hear a beep which means it's reverted to the default action of volume control.

It's very intuitive.

Controls:

Power button:

Hold: Power on/off
Press: Play/pause
Double press: BT pairing
Triple press: Dongle pairing

Top wheel:

Up/Down: Volume adjust
Press In then up/down: Previous/next (i.e. like on Youtube, you'll go back to previous video or next video)
Double press: EQ, updown = EQ presewt selection

Bottom Wheel:

Up/Down: Game/Chat balance (Xbox and PC only)
Press then up/down: Sidetone Volume
Double press: quick ON/OFF sidetone toggle

MFB button (next to ports)

Press: AI Noise Suppression (for your microphone): Low, Med, High

As mentioned beofre, the microphones have automatic gain control, so we do not have volume control for the mics on the unit. You can tweak past this with programs like PS5 internal volume control, discord, etc.
so when going thru the presets, do the headphones say “preset 1,2,3 etc”? so i’ll know which of the usable 4 custom presets i’m on? does it say actual names of the pre-loaded ones? like footsteps, etc? thx for your info.

There's a lot more amp gain, so this situation shouldn't arise. I'm not savvy on the technological side of this, but it doesn't appear to be an issue on Maxwell. There's a LOT of headroom.

As you cycle through the presets, a voice will tell you which one you're on. So as you adjust the preset selection, you'll hear the voice state the EQ per each adjustment.

That would make you the goat LMAO.

It's just helpful to see what they've boosted, so if footsteps for example are on a different frequency band in the game we're playing compared to what they EQ'd for then we can a small adjustment, but not reinvent the wheel.

I used Astro headsets for the longest, and I'm used to Astro giving us their recommended EQs and allowing us to copy/customize them all we want. It's a little odd to try and keep it secret as sound engines vary widely from game to game so minor adjustments are normal.

There is no big secret here. We will keep fine tuning these and will also work with the community in releasing a wide variety of presets for different games in future. With custom EQs we see people sharing their presets. The format is an XML file and anyone should be able to tweak it easily.

I watched the video and commented, and Audeze confirmed that the THUNK-THUNK-THUNK at the end is from a game's gunshots in the background. Such intermittent noises are very, very hard to suppress, yet the Maxwell apparently does it perfectly. It's very impressive.

I want the same magic for my ears. A building has just been accross the street, wrecking my nerves at the worst possible time, costing me half of my savings because I was unable to think and act. And they're going to erect a new building there, of course; construction is due to start by year's end. The ANC headphones that currently exist are powerless against intermittent noise, such as from jackhammers. Buying a pair of magic ANC headphones would be cheaper than moving out, which I'll have to do otherwise; I can't stay months and months unable to think clearly, unable to do anything productive, and there's no quiet public space where I could find refuge during what is still a pandemic.

The best I have currently, with regard to noise isolation, is Etymotic ER4SR + 3M H10A Peltor Optime 105, but the earmuffs hurt after a while, even now that I've pulled on the metal headband to decreased the pressure.

Sankar has mentioned in an interview that ANC is something they're looking into, but they want to make sure they get it right. So probably no time soon, but if it is a feasible product and does come to market, could be a real game changer. :relaxed:
