Audeze LCD-4

What? Does it say you'll get a random type of wood when you buy them? Why are customers paying $4000 having a gamble here?

What is that half and half monstrocity too? LOL

There is a great deal of color variation when it comes to ebony wood.  But all those in the pics are ebony wood, so its the same type.

You guys expect them to cut down a bunch of trees and have them all look exactly the same the whole way through?

Google image search ebony wood and see what you get.

Plus you could get 5 different people to photograph the same pair of headphones and get 5 completely different pictures.

I think it's pretty awesome. Each LCD is unique, and non are exactly like the other. Kinda cool to have a headphone that is the only one in the world. I'm sure Audeze will accommodate you if you request a certain type of look, dark, light, etc. I really wanted a Cocobolo after getting my first LCD-4 which was Ebony. Luckily I got a B stock from Audeze.

My first pair of LCD4 Ebonies with 100 ohm drivers looked like this:

Wait. What? They made 100 ohm Ebony LCD-4s? I thought they only made the Cocobolo in 100 ohm version and then switched to 200 ohm Cocobolo until supplies were exhausted. It was at this point that the Ebony arrived. That's my understanding. Wrong?

My first set was ordered on Nov 9 2015, which was about 6 weeks after its initial release.  They did have ebony for the international customers.  As I live in Canada they weren't able to offer Cocobolo for export.

I was looking closely at the gasket and noticed mine has several holes/gaps in both cups. If I pull the pads slightly outwards the gaps open quite wide. Is this normal? I wonder if it affects the sound. Here are two pictures

That depends on your definition of normal. Is that how Audeze intended they be made? No. Is that what every LCD-4 I've seen or touched looks like, yes. I have had my hands on 5 or 6 different LCD-4s, all of the ones I have seenhave little holes like that.

I seem to remember a post from Audeze a year or so ago that the 200 ohm LCD-4 intentionally has these gaps to equalise the driver film so that they don't make a squeaky noise (like a Stax) when you put them on.

You should be able to choose the wood for these. I can buy a solid guitar body from Warmoth  or Musikraft and it's no big deal. Especially at this price point. If it takes a longer turn around time so be it. I'd rather wait and get what I want.

That's the reason for the addition of the gasket itself which is only there for the 200 ohm version I thought. I don't think the holes are meant to be there?
