Is Atrac Advance Lossless at 256kbps the best i can use for sony portable players? I'm looking for pure sound quality only. The device is the Sony NW-A1000.

Are you sure it's lossless at 256kbps? It sounds way too low - even the best lossless codecs tend to average around 800kbps for CD audio.

ATRAC is well known to have poor sound quality, even compared to MP3 and WMA. Have a read up on Wikipedia about it.
