We are getting users now posting their views, people who have compared it with HD 800.
Whem most of you say you need the right equipment,is the amp you are mainly referring to, do they have to be balanced or is it just another option.

W5000 is picky with its amp and I've only had experience with SE W5000.

Sorta w/ you on the build quality of ps1k. Was a little turned off by it. Especially the earfoams/earcups which feel like some cheap foam fabric and the pleather headband...looks exactly like a derivative of one of those black leather belts by cutting and shaping them into what it is. Was expecting better build quality given the steep price, which cost even more for a Canadian. They do sound damn good though right out of the box.

By the by, how's the comfort of w5000? Written "known for troublesome fit" up top. How many of ya all have had discomfort? My ad900 presses my right ear slightly and causes a mild pain in the long haul.

Note: This is a comparison that I made with both the W5000 and HD800 being SE.

I'm used to that. Just grin and bare it.. If you truly feel that way, you should state it. It doensn't sound unbelievable that the W5000 could be on par with the HD800 in certain areas.

Source, amp, and to some, cables. Both are picky. The HD800 should be tougher to please in theory being more neutral/flat, and maybe transparency. The W5000 has it's own amp, which I hear takes it to another level, since it was specifically designed for the W5000.

what would be the cost of the duo headphone + amp, and would it take it above the HD 800 experience.

The amp is discontinued I believe, and was over 1,000 USD.. But would be worth it if you adore the sound of the W5000.

I think overall, the HD800 is better. I, for one, don't think the W5000 betters the HD800 in detail retrieval. The HD800 has also a better low end than the W5000 in my opinion not to mention a much larger soundstage (although arguably, the soundstage is artificially wide). The HD800 is also more neutral than the W5000. Another AT phone which is sort of a cross between the W5000 and HD800 is the A2000X, although I think the A2000X is inferior to both the W5000 and HD800.

My dynamic amp at the time I had these phones was a balanced Beta22 as well as a headamp GS-X.

HD 800 soundstage artificially wide like the K701?

Is there any comparisons to the DX 1000 and W5000?

These two headphones have completely different flavors. The DX1000 leans toward the low end while the W5000 leans toward the mids/treble.

Hey, guys, I just read the news about the latest Sony Walkman stereo cassette player with anti-rolling. It's a bit early to tell, but I think this may be the new king of the portables.

I will get back later. Stay tuned.

^ Yes. That is the truth.

Extremely system depending.
With high-end and well-fitting gear this headphone is:

- Phenomenally detailed.
- Always smooth and deep sounding.
- Very good in sense of tonality. Not as hot as modified Denon’s, but more natural sounding.
- With fantastical sopranos extension.
- With very good; resolving, powerful but not exaggerated bass.
- With very rich but not offensive midrange.
- With some kind of added echoes.
- With splendid soundstage – extremely big (particularly as for closed headphones), well ordered and rich of reverberations.
- With very good but not perfect human voices reproduction.

But with weak or maladjusted systems sound is thin and unnatural.

^ No. That is your opinion.

about the ad900: i'm still not sure if the 2 thingies joining the driver capsules together are metal, but those of the w5000 are, so you can bend them and adjust how much/little they clamp your head like how you may bend the headband of a pair of grados.

imo they are the most comfortable headphones i own, more comfortable than my stax, grados, denon d7000, k701 (which are uncomfortable), etc.
