W5000 is a VERY smooth phone, it is really picky about EVERYTHING, I still really like it.

But prefer the AD2000 more.

PS: I thought someone grave dig this thread from like 2005 or something... xD

I noticed that people here are really polarized when it comes to the AT woodies. They either love them or hate them. Searching for opinions on the W5000 and the W1000 you get pretty polarized reviews.

Even in the For Sale forums, you'll can go months without seeing any of these phones for sale, then suddenly, as if on queue you'll see 3 or 4.

It's just the Head Fi way

The truth about Audio-Technica ATH-W5000

In production since 2005.
Extremely system depending.
With high-end and well-fitting gear this headphone is:

- Phenomenally detailed.
- Always smooth and deep sounding.
- Very good in sense of tonality. Not as hot as modified Denon’s, but more natural sounding.
- With fantastical sopranos extension.
- With very good; resolving, powerful but not exaggerated bass.
- With very rich but not offensive midrange.
- With some kind of added echoes.
- With splendid soundstage – extremely big (particularly as for closed headphones), well ordered and rich of reverberations.
- With very good but not perfect human voices reproduction.

But with weak or maladjusted systems sound is thin and unnatural.

i have a pair of w5000 - my first 'nice pair of headphones. They're certainly the most detailed headphones I have but they dont get much of a listen nowadays. They excel in some areas, but are pretty ordinary in others.

That comment seems to come from an owner who is not happy with them

.

Sort of rules out everything said about them earlier.

i'm still not sure about them.. i think i need the ha5000 amp, or whatever the audiotehnica amp is called, or maybe a yammy to make it sound best but I've got too many headphones now to do that.. recently I find myself listening to stax more than anything else. Maybe I should sell everything and go full out stax?

the w5000, they can sound very good, but like I said it depends on what you listen to (e.g. they're good for classical). if you like to hear every detail in your music they're also good

X2. IMO, detail retrieval's at least on par with my K1000.

I wish people knew how to use the search button.

The newest in innovative technology!

If by 'new', you mean old, and by 'innovative' you mean existing for many years.

P.S. I thought the MDR-R10 was the best closed can ever! Oh no this could go on forever

Reviewers can't be always trusted.

I should buy one but keep putting it off..

You should! I'm definitely thinking of rebuying the W5000 I sold to trakker as he's currently selling it in the FS forum.

I always wanted one.. The HD800 are too much.. Don't like the PS1000 build quality.. The T1 for a grand is temping.. The W5000 for 500.. Will decide in April, will have more money then.

Sorry for removing your great analysis of the W5000 Piotr. But I want to emphasize something often overlooked ... this can will reveal flaws that you may not know you had. On the right system they are simply sublime IMHO.

IMO, they have the best imaging of all the dynamics I have tried (which includes the HD800). They're also the best closed headphones that I've tried. They sound great balanced which gives the bass the extra push that it needs.

Finally someone's speaking up for the W5000 as I was somewhat ridiculed when I mentioned that the W5000's definitely up there with HD800 in terms of imaging, speed, and detail retrieval.

Note: This is a comparison that I made with both the W5000 and HD800 being SE.
