The only headset I've heard that is comparable around that price is the Shure SRH750 DJ. The 750 impressed me with its sound quality, go check it out....

also, for monitoring (analytical listening) i'd pick the m50, but for unamped and/or "fun time" i'd check out the denon d1001. i own the d2000 but have tried a d1001.

I'm also thinking about buying a closed can around $100... Denon AH-D1001, Shure SRH440, Sony MDR-V6 and Audio Technica ATH-M50 are the candidates, but I'm so unsure.

I love my M50. Great portable headphones. I'm not sure if there's better out there for the price, but I do know that they're quite amazing headphones, and I'm very happy with my purchase. I can actually hear the crappiness of the amp in ipod. Sounds so much better from my Total Bithead amp, which I could easily recommend as well!
