ATH m50 vs SHR840
Aug 6, 2010 at 9:14 AM Post #16 of 38
Hey guys(and girls),

Thank you for your comments and advice, I have decided on m50 instead after auditioned both of them in a shop. Love the sound of m50 more though and I also liked the sound of 750dj (surprisingly) more than the 840. Well once again thanks peeps!

I got srh840 for 2 weeks right now , and today I went to listen M50 ...M50 bass really much better than srh 840 ! it was SO FUN to listen to , it did rumble my head ! while SRh840 have neutral sufficient bass  .. but vocal and soundstage is better on Srh840 . probably I will get M50 for techno ,pop , electronica , SRh840 for classical and acoustic . SRh840 pads are bigger and thicker , while M50 pads are thinner and smaller . Overall , I prefer Srh840 pads , they are more comfortable to me. Gosh , still missing the feeling of M50 bass !

You can put the 840 pads on the M50.  Supposedly opens up the sound as well.  Do a balance tape mod and throw a touch of dynamat in the enclosure and they could be pretty much rival many $300 phones.

Hi everybody,

I'm looking for a good pair of headphones to use with my iPhone 3Gs. It will be my first pair of closed HP.
After reading hundreds of threads, I hesitate between ATH-M50 and SHR840...
In my country (Belgium) they are at the same price (150€ on Amazon fr or UK) and that's why I hesitate so much !
I listen rock, hard rock, metal, pop, electro... but I don't listen rap, hiphop and r&b at all.
I like basses but I want the best sound quality as possible...
Which one should I choose ?
Do I need an amp for my iPhone ? If yes, is the fiio e5 sufficient ?

thank you in advance.

Sorry for my bad english.

Grab the Shure SRH840. The Audio-Technica ATH-M50 is for bassheads who prefer bass rather than sound quality.

they're available with same price? the price barrier is already diminished..hence surely don't hesitate to go with srh840

Ok thank you for your advices.

But what about the amp ?

I'm also looking at the SHR440 which seems good for me ( I don't have any amp)

SHR440 whitout amp = 80€
SHR840 + amp (fiio e5) = 180€

Which one has the best sound quality for the price ?

Thank you.

I love my modded and tuned M50s but $150 Euros?!  I don't think I'd get either honestly but I don't pay European prices.

For me, you are the troll and the ignorant, because you don't respect the opinions of others and catalogue them as trolls. I see that some "audiophiles" don't accept other opinions and what they say must be taken as the only truth.

The M50 is way more bassier than the SRH840, that's a fact and can be empirically proved. You should A/B them with the same amp, song and volume. Then come back and post your impressions.

Of course they have more bass...no one is denying that.  It's the part where you say that obviously the people that like them only like bass and don't care what the rest of the can sounds like that is bothersome.

150 EUR = $190 USD Surely that's not too bad? That's the same price we have here in Canada.

Thats horrible IMO.  Thats twice what most of us pay in the US for them.  2x's more $=bad.

+1 for the Shures if your music taste is very wide, they'll be pretty good for every genre out there. I can't really comment on the m50's, but I'm gonna make an educated guess and assume the 840's are better balanced and more neutral.

this shure 840 vs m50 question needs its own link and button right at the top of headfis main page due to the overwhelming volume of topics made for it.

its apples and oranges.  in terms of sound quality, the shure 840 is much nicer.  in terms of user friendliness and comfort, fun factor, the m50 wins.
