Hey I'm new to all this and I was wondering what people would recommend. I primarily game about 85-90% of the time and only would be using them for music 10-15% at most. I play FPS competively and do go to lans occasionally although I'm not to worried about them being open. I wouldn't be using them with an amp for right now but I may buy one in a few months when I have the money. I currently have a X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty sound card.

I know that the AD700's are good for gaming but if I got the money why not. I still am wondering based just for gaming which are better the AD900 or the MDR-F1.

How much $$?

Cheap is the AD700s, I don't find the AD900s enough of a step up for the $$.

I would get AKG 601s if you don't mind them being bass lite. The 3D sound stage is silly good. Score a misterX xp or mini 3 amp for it and yahoooo.

Btw, I have tried just about every head phone out there for gaming.

I'm using an ALO 780 atm but still think the akg 601 has a better sense of being there for games.

Bass on the alo 780s is crazy good though. Always a bit of a tradeoff.

I was realistically thinking no more then 300$ I also don't care about bass since I don't want it drowning out more important sounds like footsteps or other useful audio cues.

I would look at the Beyer DT880. I game with mine all the time. They are comfortable for those long gaming sessions, and the sound is very realistic. The explosions are there but not overbearing. You can hear footsteps easily and the sound of the thrown grenade is easily heard. They are my Call of Duty phones.
Can be found at Amazon for a decent price: Amazon.com: Used and New: beyerdynamic DT 880 Premium Headphones $218 for open box or $299 brand new.

But don't take my word for it, see the list here of gaming headphones (Presented by Kool Bubba Ice from post above!!): Kool Bubba Ice's Base
Look down his lists until he rates those headphones under $400, he gives the beyer's 5 stars for gaming!

I do have a AD700 Vs MDR F1 gaming review in my blog. It will give you a idea about how well the AD900s will do in comparison. Just click the link in my sig.

I thought the dt8800's were headphones that pretty much required an amp and Im already kinda spending more then I originally anticipated and these are hitting my budget for the headphones alone. I was hoping you guys would give me answers not make my decision harder. I think we should look into a new economic stymulis plan where everyone visits this forum and you guys convince them to go well over their original budget :P

The 880s will still sound good without a dedicated headphone amp. But they will sound better with better amping. Then again, all headphones benefit from better amplification. The 880 is the best overall, dynamic headphone for gaming in the under 400 range. IMO. The MDR F1 is the best headphone for FPS due to replicating speaker type imaging, great spatial abilties, and holographic sound stage.

You can't go wrong with either one.

If you want to really get the most out of these, though, just listen to kool bubba ice, he has waaaay more experience with these than I do.

AKG makes a lot of headphones that are good for gaming.. 280/290, 240 sextett, 340, 601, 701.
