Hi, I'm new, though I've been looking around the forums for a couple years now >.> and yeah, my wallet. Yup.
I'm certainly new to the audophilic world, and my first decent pair of headphones has been ruined. I absolutely love my ATH-AD700s; I've only had them for a couple months now, and they're already dead. See, what happened was...
My brother tripped over the long-ass cable that's otherwise quite useful. He didn't just trip over them either, he pulled the cord (unbeknownst to me) to its maximum length while it was plugged into my desktop. Then he kept going. Almost pulled the desktop over, and honestly I might've preferred it had my headphones lived to tell the tale.
So that's a little dramatized, but I've got a real issue here. The warranty doesn't cover recklessness or idiocy, so I'm boned there. To top it off, I have no idea what is actually wrong with them.
The plug bent a bit, and at first I thought that was the issue. I'm still sure it doesn't help, although the bend was quite minimal. The stress on the actual headphones (specifically, where the cord enters) did not seem enough to cause the issue at hand. At the time, the right driver was dead. The audio on the left seemed fine, so, naturally, I felt it necessary to tamper and see if I could fix the other side. I used some pliers to [gently] bend the plug straight again. Nothing. Still played out of the left side, but nothing.
To make issues a little worse, I disassembled them [carefully] to investigate any issues with the wiring. All wires seemed intact, soldered in place, and ultimately undamaged. There was minimal tear on the wiring (the bit that leads the audio to the right side, as the cord enters on the left). Really, all there was was a bit of wire shining out where the creases in the inner design pinched the cable.
So, after dissecting my baby, I decided to put her back together. Tried to use them again to no avail. In fact, the horrified look on my face directly following the realization that neither side was no longer functioning was probably enough to... I was going somewhere with that, and then... yeah.... okay.
Anyway, I'm lost. I don't know what to do and I can't pay for another pair. If I send it in to ATH I suppose I might as well pay for a new pair, so... any help would be appreciated. I feel as if I might be able to get away with simply replacing the plug, but I haven't ever done that.
What do you guys think?
