Hi!
I recently tried a number of headphones in the store (quite noisy) recently and I really liked the AD1000x.
Unfortunately, it was also one of the most uncomfortable headphones (my ears are not round).

The R70x was much more comfortable despite being smaller (maybe the earcups were deeper?).
Although it did seem like the bass was stronger, the vocals were not as good.

I was using my mp3 player and the AD1000x can be quite loud at less than 50% while the R70x needed to be at 90%.

I'm planning to use the headphones on my PC so I was wondering if the R70x could sound as good as the AD1000x if powered properly.

My budget is $350, and I don't have a dedicated amp.

Thanks!

I have no experience with the R70X but I've heard that it's Audio-Technica's answer to the HD 600. Compared to the AD1000X however it has a much narrower soundstage but still very good imaging and separation. AD1000X is more mid-treble centric and very bass-lite and the R70X is more of a neutral/reference headphone, that's what the "R" in R70X stands for, Reference.

I was not able to try the HD600 but I did try the HD650. It didn't really impress me as much as the AD1000x.
The store was quite noisy so it was probably a big factor.

I was just wondering if my impressions of the R70x / HD650 were more due to the noise in the store, or maybe because they were not amped.
Perhaps the AD1000x was more impressive because the noise in the store drowned out some of the subtleties of the other headphones?
Maybe I just prefer the AD1000x sound signature? If so, are there similar sounding headphones that are more comfortable?

I'd say anything from the AKG K7-- series of headphones. They are wide, airy and have fantastic imaging, detail and separation like the AD1000X and they have more bass.

They are also very comfortable with the adjustable soft leather headband and velour memory foam earpads. IIRC and don't quote me on this, only the K7XX and the K712 have the velour memory foam pads.

You could also consider the HD 598 which is a goto can for many people.

I tried the K712 and the HD599 in the store. They are more comfortable than the AD1000x. The HD599 fits my ears perfectly, and they are cheaper :)
The AD1000x still sounded slightly better to me. It seemed that the voices were clearer.

Interestingly enough, I kind of preferred the HD599 to the HD650 but I'll have to check again to be sure. The HD650 seemed to be "far away".

Also, what do you guys think of the A1000z? It is more comfortable than the AD1000x, but I haven't really had much time with it yet.

The A1000Z is the closed back version of the AD1000X but despite that it still sounds quite airy. What did you think of the K712?

EDIT: The A1000X is the closed version of the AD1000X NOT the A1000Z. I think the A1000Z is a monitoring headphone.

The ATH-AD1000X is only 40-Ohms and can easily be driving from portable audio devices, where as the 470-Ohm ATH-R70X really needs to be driving by something a fair be more powerful, then a portable audio device.
