ATH-A900 VS. Sony MDR-XD400

search man, the only things that quickly come to mind is that the ATH's are big. they cover a large amount of your head and use a wing system. the sonys use that second headband thingy which basically is the same thing (almost). the sonys have a moive/music switch which can either let loose the bass or keep it controlled.

The XD400 are also big because of the side auto headphone adjust. With the XD400 on my high back lounge chair I can't move my head left or right because the XD400 hit it. Very uncomfortable for me in that matter. But the XD400 sound great. I just can't live with them because of that.

I can't speak for the sound, but i have worn the XD400s at best buy and held them.
What i can say is:
THe XD400 is lighter, and smaller.
Its more comfy because of less pressure on the head.
A900 is not too bad, but these were better.
The build quality seems easily breakable. So be careful with the hps,
it is not recommended to transport a lot i would believe.

from what ive read, i think theyre a bit boomy in bass. well the A500's are. the ATH i think has a very detailed sound that seperates everyhting in the music so you can hear the different instruments and stuff. but im just basing an A500 review on these. i may be wrong.

If you read the XD400's reviews carefully, a lot has the words for "movies" in them..., not a very good omen.

Well i cant say i heard the XD400.
But i can say i been listening extensively to my A900.

I will try to help you answer your own questions and seek help.
What facts you need to know when deciding on these cans:

A. The two are NOT in the same class.
One is High end, for people wanting the audiophile sound and to spend a more than any commercial consumer would spend on headphones.
200.00

The other is commercial, approaching high end.
For the above average consumer, most I know that this price is their limit.
80.00

B. Anything that puts tacky words like "movie" mode means more to the commercial consumer. Any high end headphone doesnt have words
like XBS, Mega bass, Movie, Big movie sound, etc.

C. The XD400 i dont expect to be a total slouch, because there are many people who enjoy these cans.

D. What is your use for them? Movies, Games, music..and a ratio?

E. Ask if best buy will demo these to a receiver for you. They are commonly laying around on a table display to wear, but if they go that one more extra mile...they MIGHt do that.

F. A900s excel in Movies, all kinds of music, and Games.
I doubt you will dissapointed unless you want to spend more money or you want something even more laid back.

These provide to me the right balance between laid back and aggressively in your face.

G. When one buys a High end can, usually one don't want to go down the ladder unless they want a portable can or Iem, but something different. 2 cans for the same task with one in a lower price class only deters the value of the dollar.

wow... someone does a LOT of reading. i guess what buster_sword is saying is true, i mean sony isnt thought of like the ATH. its like saying grado SR60's are equal to sennheiser 212's. although the movie/music switch is kinda cool
